Hi guys

Been starting to learn guitar in the last few days, thus total newbie at it. Wanting to get a acoustic guitar but unsure where to get. Should be within $100+ or lower, must value-for-money kind.

Read online and people say Davis service is very bad, so im unsure where to go ? Might be going down to Davis shop today since i pass by, any recommendations what to ask for when i buy ?

thanks

there are a wide variety of acoustic guitars at sweelee at bras basah complex. Hmm...anyone tried harvest acoustics?Been attracted to it for a long time.

davis isn't that bad actually.. they just don't like people to only look around, at least that's how it appears to me. just go straight in and tell them what you want. anyway, i doubt you can find a decent acoustic guitar with $100.. either you save up a bit more, or get a classical guitar instead. anyway, its better to start off with a classical guitar instead of an acoustic one..

I bought a Ventage for $160 today, the daughter is chio the dad was friendly but the mum was irritating :p

What do you all think of that brand of guitar ? I got get con ? :roll:

no harvest? its a korean brand...one of the ladies from this local band uses harvest acoustic. She appeared in 8 days mag b4.

Luther is now located at Excelsior, same place as Davis. There's a good congregation of music instrument shops there now, like a musical Sim Lim. Can go look around and get a feel of the guitars there before you decide.

Vantage isn't necessarily bad. But as you progress in your guitar playing, you might develop appreciation for the kind of guitar you really want. So you dun get conned in that sense. Just a process of learning as you go along. Can always sell off the vantage if you wanna get a new guitar, or just keep it as a colllection.

For a beginner, whether getting a classical or acoustic guitar depends on what you planning to learn/achieve.

My views:

Classical Guitar
===========
If you're into classical guitar pieces (eg. John Williams, Andre Segovia), go for the classical guitar. Focus is on fingerstyle playing (eg. Signe and Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton) and uses nylon strings. Strumming is fine as well but the wider neck (fret spacing) and higher action can be challenging at time for people with shorter fingers.

Acoustic Guitar
===========
If you're into more strum and sing (eg. John Denver), go for an acoustic guitar. Focus is more on strumming or rthym playing. It is used for fingerstyle as well (eg. Acoustic blues such as Layla by Eric Clapton) but the a different effect from the mellow sound of a classical guitar due to use of steel string.

And there is of course the electric guitar. However, that's not what you're looking at it right now ... so let's reserve this for another day.

So chose the instrument that best fits what you want to play now .... and then add on to your collection as you get more into the hobby.

Do note that classical guitar playing is tougher and need dedications. Most advice to beginner to start with a classical guitar are based on the fact that nylon string is easier on beginner's finger than steel string, rather than based on what the player hope to achieve. The truth however is that if you set up your steel string acoustic properly (with lower action), it is just as enjoyable.

Hope that helps.

kapok!

from davis, haha costs about 30 bucks i think.

if you're really just beginning on guitaring, it's quite difficult to note the difference.(imo)

just go to davis and you see it!

:lol:

if you want something good then the kapok's not for you.
kapok for real beginners that are starting out, lol cause it's so cheap.

u may want to start with a kapok classical, just for practise. get familiar with fingering, changing chords, plucking, strumming anything, THEN u go into electric. then this is when u feel how much easy is it playing an electric compared to a kapok classical, high action, fat neck etc...
