Yamaha has flutes. You can also ask around the music shops at Peninsula - you will get a good idea of range and prices.

owning a pc of flute needs lotsa attention...

i would suggest u go Yamaha take a look...cause they provide good after sales services for brass n woodwind only......every weekend there will be a technician to service or for advice....very professional...

what is your budget?

think Yahama flutes start at $600+

average student model flute is around $400 for a yamaha model?
tink PS's branch has alot on showcase.
Swee lee also has flutes available, though im nt sure of the brands?
:)

Check out Pro Musique and Accent Music as well, apart from the other alternatives the rest have listed. There are couple more shops but I can't remember their names. Flautist here.

by the way, accent is yamaha dealer....so sometimes you can get slightly better price at accent with the same model..also with the agent's warranty as well...only location a bit off....hehe...

Yes Terry from Pro Musique sells - Flutes and is a flute player himself.

PS:- I saw Brand New Yamaha Flutes in Boxes - selling at about three hundred or around two hundred plus only at Jurong East Cash Converter some are plated Gold and some like Chrome coloured (cause I go there for lunch every Thursday)...

Recently they have Brand New Yamaha Trumpets , Flutes, Saxaphone for sales....as I cant play these and do not know if it's cheap - I just look look see see - but I know for sure they are all Brand New - I dont know where they got the stocks from.

Some Trumpet is very cute (Yamaha ones) - it's very small and compact....I think 100 plus or 200 only....and all comes in Original Yamaha Casing.

Go check it out my Bros

hans2u - No, but flutes can be ordered to be manufactured in a different scale. Most ( if not all ) sg bands tune to A=442 ..symphonies mayb at A=445 ...and it defers in different countries. Theres also a scale which a manufacturer follows...like the Cooper or Bennet scale...chim stuff.

Places to check out for flutes :

Pro Musique - Jupiter,Burkart ( custom flutes ),GMT
Accent - Yamaha, Altus.Gemeinhardt,Armstrong,Trevor James
Band World - Sankyo,Powell, Miyazawa
Blessing Music - Yamaha
etc.

And yeah if you're looking for a sturdy but affordable flute...go with either Jupiter or Yamaha. I personally own a yamaha. Its 6 years old and still looks and feel brand new. If your friend decides to further fluting...she can just begin with upgrading the headjoint to a hand-cut one...

Good Luck!

Since we're on the subject of woodwinds I'll take this opportunity to ask, are there any sax players here that can recommend some good beginner's sax and where to get 'em.

you can get flutes at alot of places. i would say a one stop shop would be yamaha cos they have a wide range of flutes across diff levels. and yamaha's after sale service is quite good (albeit expensive). accent (near toh yi drive) also stocks yamahas, armstrongs and altus' (although i think the latter must order). another place you might wanna check out would be band world at IMM. they stock the high-end flutes (but that doesnt mean you can't buy a gibson 58' customshop historic if youre starting out on guitar!) like miyazawa, gemeinhardt, sankyo etc.

both bandworld and accent stock other accessories eg. finger pads, cleaning kits, swabs etc so yeah again, dont have to travel around the world to get different things. you can also try sweelee but yeah range is limited and when it comes to woodwinds, quality is everything. i'd recommend gg to bandworld & accent cos based on personal experience, service is really good and they've been doing woodwind/brass instruments for a super long time, so you can say that the advice they give is usually v good.

hey bro, the Yamaha Alto YAS32 would be a great saxophone to start with. Alto so kinda suitable for newer students. Its not that cheap, but sturdy, good quality (you dont have to buy better extra quality ligatures, and etc hardware) and would still suffice if you perform regularly :)
