i went to SL and Yamaha but didn't see any. thanks..

By right, Swee Lee (Vic Firth) and Yamaha (Pro Mark) should carry the stick-mallets. Maybe they ran out of stock. I get a feeling that they don't sell that well, so the shops don't bring in much...

Personally, I'd rather buy a pair of mallets separately. Playing with a pair of sticks and feeling the weight of the mallet head at the butt end of the stick just feels weird for me.

For me when I used them, I just held them closer to the butt. It's not that off...

But they're really expensive! Twice the cost of normal sticks (although cheaper than mallets)

I'm really pissed, two years ago my classmate broke mine. Since I didn't really need it I didn't bother to get another, but I'm still kinda annoyed by that.

Yeah, they're pretty expensive. Since I don't use them extensively, only for some cymbal swells here and there, I DIY-ed my own.

I based mine on this tutorial - Cartweel-Type Timpani Mallet Covering - as I felt these were closer to the Zildjian Dennis Chambers felt-covered mallet heads. I used cork for the core material, are removable. I usually leave them on though.

Note: I once asked on cymbalholic which type of mallets are ideal for playing cymbals - a guy who plays in an orchestra mentioned that he prefers using vibe mallets (yarn wound) on cymbals.

I'll be trying this other style some other time... it's more complicated.

I popped by Drum Resources yesterday and saw some Pro Mark stick-mallets. Can't quite remember the price though.

Thanks! Very interesting.

I strongly agree with him, for some reason the cotton wool or felt timpani mallets just feels wrong on cymbals. I always use yarn cord mallets when using suspended cymbals in orchestra. The soft ones are more mellow than timpani, the hard ones have more cutting attack.

Yo Sam!
Drum Resources:

The website is not updated though. They have just shifted to Haji Lane. Have to give them a call before heading down to check if they are open. Reason being Nigel (the boss) is recuperating at home after a heart operation. So his wife, Rachel, will come down and open the shop on some days.

Aiyah. Just get my contact from the Momo folks lah. See what I can do to help you :D

thanks Mel! i went down to drums resources today and bought the stick-mallets. Nigel is a very very friendly guy. i definitely be getting drums stuff from him in the future.

That's great Sam!
Good good. Buy more gear. MORE MORE MORE!
