where should i anchor my thumb?

No real "correct" way... but yes your thumb should be used for muting the lower strings when you're playing the higher ones. If you're playing your E or A string then just rest it on the pickup lar.

i rest mine on the soapbar at the neck at all times and use my index and middle finger to play. unless i use a pick, then that's a different story :lol:
