Hi all i am interested in getting to learn the bass i was wondering if anyone here can point me in the right direction as to where could i get lessons ( or whether is it needed) or how to get things started?

It's good to have a teacher to go to, in order to get you on the right track and also to teach you the correct techniques, because bad habits are hard to unlearn later on (personal experience, trust me on this one).

Having said that, you can also start out on your own. There are a lot of online resources to help you along. You can find almost anything, from articles about technique, all the way down to articles about how to look after and maintain your bass guitar.

Most self-taught players start out learning songs from tabulature, or tabs. I think it's also good, if you have a good enough ear, to try and learn things by ear, cos most of the tabs out there are not 100% correct. Not good to blindly follow them.

In my own opinion, it would be best to learn a little on your own first, then go to a teacher after that, as you would know what you want out of your playing. I find that doing so will allow a you to be more focused about what you want to learn.

Just my two cents worth.

The best 1st step would be to get a good beginner bass to start flexing your chops on. You could narrow down some within your budget and perhaps ask for opinions down here or on www.talkbass.com, another good bass website.
