What's your effects chain like?

My biggest problem now is N0ise. I think it's the problem of the BOSS CS-3. It's super noisy even if it's first in my chain. Or could it be my cables?? Noise is super irritating, have to turn down my volume everytime I am not playing coz it'll hiss..cackle..and pop.

Check your cables. If it is not your cables, then your amp. Remember to use a 3 pin plug. If it is not your amp, then your guitar. Check for loose wirings and bad pickups. If not your guitar then it got to be your effects. Use them one by one and see which one is faulty.

just to add on a bit. The noise is a humming sound or hissing sound in the back ground?

For the hum, like what marshall_law said, changing the 2 pin plug of the amp will help in reducing the hum due to the grounding. If not, it cud be also due to the single coil pickup (if you are using any in you guitar). If its the single coil pickup, then might have to live with it as its part of the characteristic of the single coil. If not, then invest in some noiseless single coil pickup and get a tech to do some shielding

For the hissing in the background, most often if you uses some high gain pedal its a norm to have the hiss, in a band context, it might not be obvious. Usually its only when you are playing guitar alone, you will tend to be particular with this hissing sound.

As what marshall_law said, cable will also affect the noise. Invest in some good instrument cable will reduce this problem, but not entirely as your guitar, pedals all make a part in reducing the noise.

If you still encounter the noise after changing everything(Pedals to guitar to amp to cable) then get a boss Noise suppressor and add in your chain of effect, sure to cut down on the noise

As for the CS-3, sorry bout it, imho, this pedal cannot make it. I would rather use a dod milkbox or marshall ed-1 if i really need a compressor.
And if you are really serious about compressor, then save up and get either a keeley comp or analogman bi-comp. These 2, either one, is probably the better compressor that you can get in the effect market.

wakemeup music at queenstown. They bring in some of the rarest and some of the best pedal. But their MXR runs out of stock very quickly.

Swee Lee also brings in alot of MXR pedals. Go have a look. But most of the pedals are above $200.
Swee Lee at sims drive displays the pedals which you can hold and admire while sweelee at bras basah keeps all the MXRs in boxes on the shelves.
:(

anyone know how much does swee lee sells thier Voodoo lab speakle drive...planning to get one soon

Take to queenstown MRT. Turn right after coming out from station control. When reached ground level walk in the direction where the old queenstown cinema is. walk about 5 minutes
you will reach margaret drive. WMUM is within those old hdb blocks there.

by the way can anyone recommend a pedal that boosts the signal or gain or volume for guitar solos, besides the usual EQs...

Well, if you are looking for "value for money" and relative quality, I would recommend the BOSS SD-1 coz ttz what I'm using now.

Set drive low and level high, it boosts the sound pretty good...plus some gain!

Any overdrive pedal or distortion pedal will give you extra gain. But the other pedal like delay, flanger needs to go through the FX loop for it to sound nice.

if you are looking for just a clean boost with extra gain to drive you amp hard(if its just a practise amp or solid state amp, then its not worth it to go this way), you might have to look over to some of the more expensive boost pedal(around $200-$300++)

A boss or some other eq pedal is more on frequency boosting, not gain.

If you dont mind using an overdrive pedal with the gain turn to lowest, its also a good way of boosting gain, but it will colour the tone to a certain extend

I have a question, what do you mean by boosting the frequency and gain? What difference does it make?

From what i understand, its as follow:

boosting frequency- Increase the treble, bass, mid response etc to make the guitar tone fatter, thinner, more treblish or more bass. Measure in hertz(Hz)

Boost in gain- Add on to the original tone of your guitar to amp setup, adding boost in term of gain(measure in dB) without too much colouring of tone by another set of EQ (for a clean boost that is, not overdrive pedal. OD pedal have their own set of eq curve, thus the possibility of colouring the tone)

Clean boost pedal usually have only one knob and a stomp switch. The knob will increase the gain and thus the volume, without altering too much of the tone. Usual effect/result of a clean boost pedal in the chain should brighten up the tone, adding some spark/presence without adding too much bass or treble. Normally if you used lots of efx, the boost pedal will be at the end of the chain(just before its connected to the amp) to boost up the signal lost in pedals, cable etc.

Some ppl use a boost pedal to push a tube amp hard(at high volume) and thus getting a smooth overdriven(slight) tone.
