Hi, humour a newbie here....

Personally, I dun use much amp-based effects, I run my sound thru

BOSS CE-3---->ZOOM GFX-8---->BOSS SD-1 (booster)

pretty simple...

I plug straight too. 8) Occassionally a Boss OD1 for overdrive when i can't turn up the amp too loud.

In the past i used to
g->amp
then
g->EQ->DS2->amp
then i went shopping
g->DE7->DD3->GE7->tremolo->phaser->DS2->bigmuff->amp
getting all that to work gainwise is a real chore.

if the amp has an efx loop, the DE-7, DD3, tremolo and phaser can be connect to the efx loop and the ge-7, ds-2 and big muff straight to the amp input. Time modulation based efx work better in the efx loop. Too much efx between the amp and the guitar might weaken the tone. Dependin on the efx, some does really suck the tone before and after engaging the efx.

when i'm in the mood to fiddle with them...

GUITAR-->Boss FVL-->MXR eq-->BF2-->NS2-->DD6-->AMP
(in the NS2 loop...)
[Sansamp GT-2-->EH Big Muff Pi-->SD1 ]

else...
usually only use the DD6 n Gt2......

still not quite sure what's the best arrangement...

guitar -> danelectro grilled cheese distortion(which i never use) -> Crybaby Wah Fuzz -> samick 15watt amp.

hey you got a MXR EQ? issit the 6 band or the 10 band?
I am looking for one though

My old chain is..

Guitar==>BOSS GE-7==>EHX Small Clone==>EHX Holy Grail==> CrybabyWah==>BOSS NS-2==>Amp

My new chain is..

Guitar==>Amp

Haha.. sold all my effects... found them colouring my tone..

Direct connection to amps?

What kind of amps you use? Those with pre-amp/head effects and cabinets? or combo amps?

For me, cost is a real big problem, so my multi-EFX is sufficient...(some sounds really kill guitar tone....but oh well! its cheap)

I think those stompboxes are really cool, but accumulating them is a real killer for the pocket....$$

I'm using a Fender silverface Super Reverb. It's got a tonestack bypass to make the signal path even more 'direct'. It is currently being repaired so for now it's Boss OD-1 into Voodoo Lab Cabtone into my PC until the amp is back.

imho, direct to amp is definitely the clearest one can hear how the guitar sound, unless want to go into the cable used, different cable really do have effect on the tone.

As for the colouring of tone, again, i find this quite subjective. The arrangement of the pedals(straight to amp or thru efx loop) willl have effect on the tone and another issue is whether the pedal is buffered bypass(boss pedals etc) or true bypassed. What if i like to play with lot of pedals in the setup and still want to get the clearest tone, is it possible? How useful would a true bypass box be in this case.

pedal chain

g>ibanez cp5>custom sd1>custom ds1>ehx small clone>ph2>dano dj5>dd3>boss fv-300L>amp

i play in church, i guess its a bit too overkill, 2 many boxes
I think i probably need jus od, dist, chorus, delay, that's about it.

Wow! You play in a church?? Reminds me of my friend's church band that plays church songs to the tune of "Jump" by Van Halen!!!

I'm no expert....but I juz figured out my guitar, I haven't got down to figuring out amps....

I used to think itz just the guitars and amps....then the effects came in....then I realise there's something called "stacks" then "pre-amps" and "amp-heads"....and now some people are using laptops

I dun understand the "dynamics" of controlling an amp....I can't get those wailing harmonics when I plug straight to amp....I rely on my Boss SD-1 on drive to get it....?

Care to give some "amp" tips?

it may be that your amp's gain isn't intense enough to induce harmonics. a supplementary drive pedal does help boost the gain.

i went full circle, used to plug straight into the amp, then my chain became effects laden, now back to plugging in straight. a lot of it had to do with the amp, i started out with a small practice amp (i think many people here do likewise) & that doesn't help generate good tones/ at least what you wanna hear. after acquiring a good amp, then that's all that matters: guitar + amp = happy :)

ocassionally i do use my EQ + tubescreamer through the loop. it sounds better this way.
