Hi all,

Just discover this forum and i would say it's really great to see some music lovers here.

I am a newbie to electric guitar and intend to get either a Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster. My budget is around 1.2k. There are a few areas which i would like to know more, hope someone can help...

1. what is the different between the maple and rosewood fretboard on strat? or which is a better ?

2. I listen mostly pop, rock and blues stuff (amatuer), read-> chinese pop rock, 70s-80s rock and some acoustic stuff, which is a better guitar? strato or a tele?

3. I can play alittle acoustic stuff like Tears in heaven, smoke on the water, hotel california and some licks from stairway to heaven etcs. Should i get a instructor to learn the electric? any recommendation?

Cheers

Go yamaha to learn, buy a second hand highway stratocaster, its the all you need guitar in your life... then use the rest of the money to buy a marshall mg30... use the remaining 200 to buy a wah wah pedal, or you might just wanna blow it on an marshall avt 50...

Stratocasters are not well liked cause of their shape and pickup configuration... but i'm glad you even considered a stratocaster... but keep one thing in mind, stratocasters are very versatille, they can play every single genre there is, with a few slight modifications here and there...

Thanks for the recommendation, appreciate it.

Hmmm... i always thought stratocaster are well liked, with guitars heros like jimi hendrix, yngwie malmstein and eric clapton? Isn't the shape of a strato or tele a classic? or i am getting old :P hahaha....

yeah, but more people are going for ibanez due to artist endorsments i think... but soft.com also have some strat heros... and if i'm not wrong, telecasters are first invented before the stratocasters...

Not much difference between a rosewood or maple fingerboard, colour is a definite obvious, but tone wise, rosewood is generally warmer sounding than maple. I personally prefer maple, because it doesn't absorb all the dirt and grime from your fingers unlike rosewood, which will begin to show stains after extended periods of play.

As for choosing which, play both and see which feels better and more comfortable :D Hope this helps!

$1.2K lots of dough. U can get something really nice. Are you planning to get a first or second hand guitar? How about a MIJ strat? The quality's there. Some of the Soft members are going for a mass order from Japan's Ishibashi. As for whether strats are well-liked... the number of imitations speaks for itself. Its truely a comfortable design.Personally i don't like the Highway Strats even though they are MIAs. The colors and finishings are not really my type of thing.

Are you planning to get an amp as well?

Ibanez sound abit too raw for me and somehow it associate more for shredder. Just my own view though.

what are the guitars worth considering? beside Les paul (out of budget) and Ibanez? Yeah, somehow i do not have a very good impression of that school as well.

see what everybody says, dont limit yourself to just fenders, thats true partly... sorry guys about my fender post, just that i'm a fender fan... anyways, the highway has a humbucker single humbucker configuration, so yeah, with a change of pickups, you'd can get almost any sound...

How much discount can we get from a MASS order from Japan? I really dun mind MIJ strat, infact i saw something like a black Fender Aerodyne Strat AST65 that i think is really very cool or a 3 tone sunburst strat. If i can get a hand on a good condition 2nd hand guitar that it's ok as well, but some that i saw really beat to shit.

I am not sure is 1.2k lots of dough as most of the fender guitar seems quite ex. Well, i was thinking, even i can't play nuts but at least i have a good guitar... hahaha :D

I have a very old amp at home, dun even know the amp name so i can save up for a better amp on a later stage.

to be honest, the fender highway was my first guitar, and i couldn't play nuts, worst of all, i was playing punk with it, until my bother showed me whats real rock(THANK YOU BRO)[/size] then i got involved in the real rock thinggy, and the guitar motivates me to learn learn learn... just my poing of view...

A Fender Strat is a good guitar to start with, if you have the money, in which I see you do have. Does your budget include getting an amp? I suggest getting a S-S-S strat to start with, and if you ever find any of your pickups lacking you can always change them. There are single coil shaped humbuckers from dimarzio and seymour duncan, in case you ever need a humbucker. A Strat will evolve with you as you play, which is what I like about them. For this reason, try to get a first hand one rather than a second hand vintage model as it might be quite hard for you to modify a piece of history, unless you are absolutely sure that it is very common.

And about learning guitar from a school or person, do it only if you think it's absolutely necessary for you to do so in order to evolve or improve.

MIJ Fender is actually quite good. But quoting mr Subversion said, don't bother about where it made. As long as it feels good, and sounds good.

Joining the mass order is an advantage if you are buying fender japan. you can get it around $200 cheaper than getting in singapore. But then, you don't have the luxury of trying it before buying.

hmm....i''m in question..new to electric guitar and you are going for a 1k guitar already...no offence, but..would you like to reconsider or something?

as what you said "lespauls out of buget", there's always the epiphone or burny lespauls instead of the gibson.

if you use that $1.2k to investing in everything, guitars, amp, pedals. i think you will get a real decent rig already.

well i do recommend ibanez guitars, it's versatile but one thing which i didnt like about it is the frets. They have a wide range of guitars, anything you wan, you like, you can sure find one of ur fav from them
