What not to do before singing?

Some people say not to to consume chilli/spicy stuff? What other things can you do to protect your voice before a gig? What other precautions should one take?

Drink enough water and get lots of rest on the night before the gig. Try to avoid alcohol too as it dehydrates you and makes your throat dry. Honey water is good too. And remember to warm your voice up before the gig.

No milk.
No staying up late. :/
No lacking warm up... (funny english heh, trying to fit into the "not to do")

actually it helps of you don't eat at all. just drink water. warm up. You don't want to burp into the microphone don't you? or hold it back.

Based on experience :)

for singers fronting bands - try not to fart before a song - especially the audible type ... your band members will be cracking up and wont be able to play properly ..take it from me

thats gross.

really ? ... well then you should see the reaction when I leggo the "Silent" killer smelly ones before a song then .... especially during packed house nights when everyone will have to try to act "normal" after the aroma fragrance had been dispensed with on stage ...

Do not have sex at least 3 months before.

If you do that, I guarantee you can reach the high notes in Beat It quite easily.

tsk fgl.. you and your gas.... Remind me to try light one up one day, I wanna see how powderfool it is... lol

From my side of "don't"s ..
- Don't fall asleep / get sleepy / tire yourself out. Your throat muscles relax and you'll have a hefty bit of work trying to get your throat and body ready for the vocalwork / overall showmanship.
- Don't eat at least an hour before a set; 3 hours, if you happen to overeat. I'm pretty okay with eating anything as long as there's time before the set to rehydrate yourself, let everything settle in and digest first, (and for fgl's case) settle 'out' :P
- Don't talk so much. Especially if you have to have a chat over the volume of whatever band is playing before you.. take this time to go one corner away from everyone to prep yourself mentally (reviewing your lyrics, showmanship, techniques etc), warm up and/or rest for a bit.
- Don't crowd yourself with secondhand smokes and air pollution. Go somewhere with fresh(er) air, work your air regulations and relax. Especially useful if you're nervous; the breathing exercises help calm your nerves.
- Don't piss the soundman off :P For obvious reasons! Buy him a drink or something lol
