What kind of musicians have you seen so far?

I have played music for sometimes now for over 20 years but I kept stumbling with the same kind of people. Are you seeing this too? Hehehehe!!

The people are:-

Star players : Will always come late for practice and gigs. Some came late till the gig is over. Lucky I've got lots of frens that I can rely on to fit in.

Lazy players : Never do homework and just want to 'hantam' while in practice and claimed to know it all. Some always no time to learn new songs.

Poor players : Always have no money to chip in when jamming. But must get same pay when playing a gig. Even with a contract playing, after 3rd day of pay...no money liao.

Problematic players : Always have a reasons like grandfather passed away when can't make it for practice and gigs. I wonder how many grandfathers one have when they kept passing away. Best of all, NO SHOW and 'off' mobile phone.

Original players : Always wanna play everything note by note and bar to bar and will stop playing when his counting of bars is over. Even in live playing when the band mates want to extend a few bars he'll just stay still. Feel like knocking his head dah!!

Smart players : Always right with his own opinion. All the bands sucks except our band. Hehehehe!! Like to improvise until the cover song changed totally. Crappy guy this is.

Saluti!

Lazy, poor, problematic i keep seeing and most of them are from teens to early 20s for these types.
When finally asked them what problems "oh i am a student study more important" Then i kick them out of the band.

Hehehehe!! Yeah....these are all the kind of human behaviors we see. I hope...I'm none of all these as described to others.

But I do have a bad side of me, don't know what you'd call it. When I get pissed off with the members with those things I'll just pack my things and just go. If I'm not mistaken it's called, 'Headwind' from a direct translation in malay as 'Kepala angin'. Hehehehe!!

Some types I have encountered.

The reliable type: People who are not only punctual, and who make it a point to be on time or early, even. I've performed with such people and they made me play better. These are real musicians. And best of all, they're disciplined, passionate and also great players / singers. If they're late, they apologize and have a good reason for it.

The unreliable type: People who are often late and don't seem to notice that I'm pissed by having to wait so long. They don't seem to think lateness is wrong and disruptive. They're also rather poor players and often can't even be in tune.

The beginners: Some people rush into joining a band despite being beginners. There's nothing wrong with beginners, everyone was a beginner before, but the thing is, to play in a band and make it work, everyone in the band has to be of a certain standard already. So don't rush. If you're a beginner, take it slow. Work on your skills first, and when you're ready, THEN join a band.

Not trying to sound arrogant by the way. I've actually stopped playing in bands recently because of my own inadequacy. I'm a hobby guitarist now. :)

Agree. I suppose it's true that their studies are more important, but if they can't commit to the band, they shouldn't even join it and waste their bandmates' time and effort.

Had a piano player in my band like this ... Her name was Mrs Koo... Always coming up with reasons like father pass away, fall sick, out of Singapore at the moment and other stuff.

isn't she a piano teacher as well lol. thought i saw a huge thread on her somewhere around.

Haha... Lotsa wannabes nowadays..
I personally dislike ppl who don't come prepared for prac. Like wat tetragammaton has said, lazy ppl. Those who just wanna come and hantam during jamming. Or worst come to jamming then ask u how to play.
And these ppl dun know that they're wasting time and $$..
Dun understand y these can just come for prac and jamming when they themselves are the one who's enthu bout the jamming.

Interesting thread, this. I used to have a problematic member before. Always had to take care of his house right before jamming or his mum would leave the house in his charge right before jamming or girl problems.

Rule no.1 when in a band: no girl problem would be big enough to cancel jamming for, unless you're married or engaged.

Rule no.2: cannot commit, say cannot

not referring to anyone specific but

there is this group of 'insecure players".
They feel insecure about their own playing abilities, cannot take criticisms,
also, they often worry that they are too soft the other band members cannot hear them, so they turn up their volume until damn loud.

Maybe we're all once like that..

Well, theres also the extremely humble musicians who often exaggerate how much they suck, but when they actually play their instrument they are damn damn good, better than everyone else in the band.

Members who come to practice and didn't even listen to the song we need to practice as a band. will keep asking "whats the chord again?" hehe

haha, if all the complainers of this thread forms a new band,i am sure it will go smoothly and be ready for gigs very soon.=)

Sad to say.Soft.com.sg is available for them easily to "search for a band". Some of them really doesn't know what constitute a band. in their mindset, its like "its just a band only wat". Not NS,school or work. So they can anytime comes in and hantum or quit anytime they like. Such Assholes.

Yeah. It's really very easy, especially for the very young ones. Nowadays, with Soft forums, teens around 14+ can already form and join bands... I get the idea that many bands formed here on Soft are comprised mainly by teens. Only once in awhile you get a mature adult seeking a band.

I think emphasizing on the band being serious, and having a bandleader (a manager, somewhat) to make sure things go smoothly, fire unreliable members, enforce higher standards and promote improvement, etc. would make things better. It is important that a band has a good bandleader, in my opinion..

Oh and I think we forgot the "Shredder Jammer". Comes in, plugs in guitar...wanks non-stop at a loud volume in a bid to get compliments over his/her playing and does so at every quiet opportunity. Hey dude/gal, I think you're good...but I think you should stop wanking off the guitar too much cause I can't hear myself talking to the other bandmates about a certain part that needs to be fixed.
