top40s means u go to any radio station and listen to their top 40s songs, and ask your band to cover all of them. Then u got a top40s band.Mainstream i dont know.

Because there isn't such a band, at least to my knowledge, that's named 'Top 40's' They're referring to bands that make to the Billboard charts/Oricon/Hot Hits, you get the idea yeah?

To get an idea of MAINSTREAM & TOP 40'S bands, just listen to the radio. Best example I can offer.

Yes it will. Who keeps tracks? People who are paid to do so.

When you listen to a band playing top40s music, it does not mean they play 40songs, they will play songs that have been in the top40s chart hits over the past few years.

It's just a term not a genre, basically it's music that you hear on radio and/or are commercial successes.

When your music, irregardless of genres, receives recognition by the masses ( majority )& most importantly, is accepted& for example, played regularly you become part of the mainstream.

Think of it as streams of water. You're swimming in one with fellow sea creatures but there ain't many fishermen or predators. You swim without worry. You swim& swim till you reach the mouth of a bigger stream, like a river...

you join the salmons& before you know it you're caught by fishermen, bears& a host of other predators.

That river you swam into...
is the mainstream.
