then may i recommend the Mad Professor Mighty Red Distortion.

it's a killer high gain 80's rock distortion, think early Guns & Roses. i find it more dynamic than many other high gain distortion pedals.

hmm the best if ur a starter willing to spluge is going for something slightly boutique. something versatile. however, dont limit urself to just one, test like 5, then choose one.
thats coming from me, wanting a "GOOD PEDAL" so much but dunno how to choose also. just aimed at MI audio's cb and tz. many ppl say must try try more, but sometimes when ur starting, u just want your distortion fast.. so just love the sound, grab and go.. can sell anytime later if u want.

but seriously, you need to know what kinda sound you want before you narrow down on your choice of OD/Dist.

I use the Fireball 3. Into my blues jnr, using a std strat (sss). IMO it is the sweetest OD that I've ever heard. I think it does low gain stuff pretty well too. But if you are looking for low gain stuff only, I'd suggest the BB direct drive.
