What do you guys use for guitar recordings at home ??

I never used those things before... always went from the amp's headphones out/line out to the PC's line in. Moreover, I'm using a notebook PC with a crap soundcard.. so some of the sound date coming in from the line in is cut off! However, my recordings sound okay lah... like 1980s studio loh.

Just using SONAR 2.2XL. :)

im using a SM57 into my M-audio Fastrack. Quality is alright... much better then DS-1 direct in...

using garageband

I'm using guitarport. It's an all in one gadget to do guitar recording. And yes, only guitar, no vocal. So if you only want to record guitar, it's quite affordable and simple solution. And you get quite a number of amp simulator choices.

Result is a bit too digital for me, but then again, I'm doing recording for learning process till I can play better hahahaha. So not much an issue for me.

Does the fasttrack have a lag ?
i hear the guitarport doesnt... pls enlighten ~

i've tried afew softwares (eg. GFX2.6) ... the sound comes out 1/2 a second slower~
and when i used a creative soundcard (now removed).... there was this split-second lag ...~
it just irritated the hell out of me ... especially when strumming~

At the present, I'm using NGwave and Adobe Audition (for multitrack) into my pc...~
i use my zoom 708II (although it's for bass i use for guitar as well) as a DI,
with all my pedals plugged in.

Reason i'm contemplating getting either of the 2 is coz preparing to go Aust next year to study...
was thinking of using either of the two instead of carrying the amp over.

ok... if you just record one track at a time. there shouldnt be any lag. but if your tracking software is weighed down by many layers of tracks.. then you gotta up your computers ram i guess...

so far my recordings never exceed 4-5 tracks... no problems with lag. But funny thing is. if i choose to monitor my track via headphones thru the fasttrack. there is a 1/2 second lag.

so now i just listen via my laptop's headphone jack. no lag from there.

yup. the SM57 can be use to record other instruments.. like bass... can record voice... percussions.. anything. maybe you want to record the birds singing outside your window also can .. neighbours lovemaking.. etc..

guitar port = guitar.

am using line 6 pod xt live. comes with included guitarport software. i don't know if guitarport alone would sound as good, but mine really gives me all the sounds i could want. even vocal effects, with for example, a slight overdriven tube preamp up front makes it sound nice. connected via usb, recording thru sonar 3 PE. but like they say, if u r gonna record vocals and all, then guitarport alone won't suffice. u need a preamp and mic.
my setup can be considered minimum, with 1/2 gig ram and 80gb hdd. amd system running at 1.8ghz. so far i've managed 24 tracks with no lag, including multiple plug ins on each track. i don't get dropouts even if i am recording continously for over 5 mins. but track by track la.
as for M-audio, i don't know, some forumners have had problems with it. some successful. i personally swore off M-audio stuff, personal reasons.

im using m-audio mobilepre usb. i think its more or less the same with the fasttrack. i use sm58 (left) and audiotechnica at804 (right) ...cause that's the only two reliable mics i have.... for guitars i use stereo cause i hate mono for guitars(dunno why, but doesnt sound good to me). drums-stereo, bass-mono/stereo, vocals-mono... just my 2 cents worth of comments... btw, my recording sounds bad and amateurish, so u might not want to listen to my words on recording. :D

aiyah ... i think ... as long as the m-audio has no lag ...
i'd get it ... coz of the mic input ...
i'd be getting a laptop with 1 gig ram ... so .. multitracking shouldnt be a prob rite ?

hmmm
can i check whether you guys run pedals thru the fasttrack ???
would it sound digital ??
coz .. i kinda like the amp simulations in the preview demo ~
but ... i get modded peds ... den .... duno if sound is compromised ~
