I actually would put the chord book away for a bit and learn some songs instead.
If any of your favourite songs have any interesting chords, try to analyse them. All you would need to do is know what key you're in and then analyse the chord against the scale of the key you are in.
This is a really good excercise as its a practical way of getting comfortable with theory. It also enables you to know your neck better because you are learning the notes in harmony rather than melodically as you would if you were only practising scales.
One of my favourite common yet unconventional chord is Fmaj7#11. Sounds complicated? Just play a F Maj barre chord in root position from the 1st fret but let the high B and E strings open.
F-C-F-A-B-E.
F, C And A is the major triad, the B is the #11 and the E is the 7th.
