hey guys, currently im looking for a mic for guitar recording.. i went up to best denki @ vivo today and found audio technica xm3s, it was priced $48.. then i did check for the mic in audio technica webs, and it says that the mic designed for instrument pickup.. i wonder if anybody use this mic and would share a feedback for this mic or maybe anybody can suggest me some good mic to buy?? i heard shure sm57 is good, but it is to pricey for me, im looking for something below $50.. :D Thx anyway

I'm using XM3s too. I have sm57 too... Different tones you can get out of both, but both useable.... All mics have different characteristics, Audiotechnica is a good brand! The big question is understanding the sound you are trying to achieve, but that comes with getting more mics and more experimentation. Because everyone's amp+guitar setup is different, there is no one mic that works best for all. SM57 is more harsh for rock, XM3s is more deep and fat for blues rock.

ok.. thx parablue for your replay.. i appreciate it.. btw how about the noise level of the mike? is it worth it?? thx alot

regarding noise level, u really need lot of experiences and a lot of factors will affected and might give u different kind of sound. Most important thing is the accoustic where u recording and the mic position that u put. Very important must take note.

oh, i think i need to practice loads on music recording.. oh ya, one more question. Can i use a mic like that while playing in a such condition that's quite noisy like playing in a church when there will be another instrument also like drum keyboard speaker etc?? or better use pickup?? thx2

Noise level low... I just did an experiment with it. I place 2 Xm3s, one high and one low facing a Peavey KB60 keyboard amp. My ibanez electric guitar through a metalzone pedal into the amp. The lead sound was prettty good. The Peavey being a keyboard amp lags the punch of a guitar amp, thus the metalzone didn't sound too fat and grind. The Xm3s gave the necessary warm and slight mud that an overclear keyboard amp lags. Result sound was a warm thick overdrive lead sound. Pretty cool!!!
There is no right or wrong in sound, it's just like cooking. You've got to add the right ingredient, no one ingredient is really better than the other. And as for using them live, yep, you can. They are dynamic mics and built with a very sturdy design material. Definately not fragile stuff....Cheers!!
