I need help. At home when i sing out loud for a long time im not tired and i dont strain my voice.. but when i go to the jamming studio . i feel tired..what should i do to improve on this? must the mike be the loudest than the other instruments? its really irritating when ur voice just dies after 4 songs, and its weird how bands perform alot of songs during a show.

hmm are you singing with the right technique? singers don't lose their voices because they use the right technique of voice projection using diaphragm instead of shouting which will damage your vocal cords.

one reason why you don't lose your voice at home but during gigs may be because at home you don't usually have to sing so loudly as compared to outside. it may be during gigs and jamming sessions that, in your excitement, you tend to scream and shout, hence losing your voice easily.

hope this helps!

Besides the singing technique, you must also know if the band is playing too loud. Learning to set you microphones will also help. There's of course standard settings for microphones but not all should have the same settings. There's low, middle, high on the settings besides the effects like delay, reverb, chorus, etc.

You tend to lower your mic level to avoid feedback or humming. But sometimes if the musicians are playing too loud this will create the feedback. What kind of music do you play anyway? Sound balancing is very important especially you're playing in a studio. The culprit normally the guitarist. Heheheh..!! Though I'm one myself. But if he learn to set his volume to a comfortable level, it'll make your job easier as a singer. But the band must come to understand even playing rock music doesn't mean to be very loud.

Lastly, when I used to sing as a living I normally jog 3 times a week to gain that 'stamina'.

Hope it help you.

Bloody hell, I'd know that. My band loves to blast their volume until I give up trying to get my voice heard at the risk of losing it.

Btw I'd need to open a thread regarding those settings bit... I don't know how it works :( Last jam I had, donno what I did but I messed up the controls till there was a choral backing my voice! It was cool, but freaky sia...

Awesome tips tetra!

Yes, increasing the mic level plus adjusting the equalizer to your voice will definitely help. From time to time you'll see things better I'm sure. Sometimes the mic is just to hard to sing in, well that's because the setting is not right for your voice.

just to add on to that, as you gain experience and sing more, you will know what are the best equaliser settings for your unique voice. you will also be able to listen and hear what your voice needs through the amplification system. that way you can tell the sound engineer what your preferred settings are. :)

anyone can enlighten me on adjusting the settings? i usually only adjust low mid high and reverb cos dun reli know abt de rest.. very noob >.< what other basic settings should i know? wads the difference btwn reverb and delay? wads chorus? =X

Well..that's the basic thing you should do in adjusting. Everyone has their own setting and preference. I can't tell what suits you. Depending on model and made of the sound system some only come with reverb. Reverb, Delay, Flanger, Chorus, etc.. are all effects that come from the newer version. The norm are usually reverb and delay. The difference is delay can give you a very high echo compared to reverb. Chorus and flanger are seldom used but they are used at some occasion. Adjusting the delay well, can give you a nice blend of atmospheric echo where making singing easier. Too much echo will make your voice artificial and fake. But depending on the song, you may adjust the delay time accordingly. Try playing it around to hear yourself how the effect suits you.

Hope that help!

wah bro Tetra - dat one a bit too powerful for me .... can get stamina all rite but after dat I tend to forget the words ..hee hee ...

Vocal stamina, is trained by more singing, and by very very precise air control. Generally, you are at a disadvantage if you're female, guys have more air. Theres a reason why castratos(did i spell it right?) were more heighly valued than female sopranos in renaissance opera. It will take a very long time depending on how much you practice to reach your full singing potential. One thing I can tell you is that, everyday, sing scales, and practice the transition from full voice to falsetto. Theres no such thing as mic not suited to your voice, it's how well you project it, you must remember that when you sing, you want to maintain the "position" that you are "projecting" the sound from. From what I've learnt from opera, its maintaining the position between your eyes, and make sure there is little or no excess air coming out from you. It will muffle your voice, again, this comes with practice.

A fat guy like me got more air control thus making us better singers like Luciano Pavarotti?

best way is to either turn up your microphone so you can hear yourself better, or ask ur band mates to lower their instruments!

it happened t me when i was in a band back then, it's annoying!
