You can consider going for vocal lessons and at the same time listen and learn to new songs as well as the classics.Once u are ready,try to get gigs to gain experience in performing in front of a small crowd for a start.From then on,it's ur own destiny to call.All the best!
It is not a problem at all. A vocal coach is very much like a teacher, and you can make all the mistakes you want. You are there to get your voice tuned up, to learn new things, so there's no pressure at all if you haven't performed before etc.
But prepare a song, so that when she/he asks you to sing, you'll be able to and they can gauge and find out what exercises to give you to fine tune your singing.

I can recommend u a good music school. Echo music has the cheapest rate in town. I took my vocal lessons there under Esther. She is a great instructor. Right now the school has a promotion, when u sign up for any course, u will receive a free guitar, and also the registration fee is waived. Great lobang. Hey pothios, I'm a vocal coach myself, and yes I normally get my student to sing me a song on the first session. The songs range from "Doe a deer a female deer...", to the alphabet song, to 'When You Say Nothing At All' to something Mariah Carey might sing.
I do it just to gauge a student's pitching/rhythm and general ability in music, so it doesn't really matter which song is sung. You can sing "London bridge is falling down..." and it'd be fine for me and I'm sure for many other teachers as well. So there's nothing to worry about.
Like someone before me said, you're there to make mistakes, and teachers are prepared to see you make mistakes and do something totally funny and humiliating. But that's how everyone learns, so no nothing to specially prepare. Just anything that comes to your mind, even nursery rhymes!
