hey i am new in soft and i would like to know if there are any recommendations for any vocal equipment, say, mikes and things like that. haha, i am not sure if this question should even be posted here.

warm water! does that count? Ok i don't really have proper answers to your qns but i do wanna know what equipment do fellow softies use etc.

For mics you could get a standard Shure 58 / SM58, it's versatile, good and dependable for vocalists everywhere. It's pretty much the mic everyone starts with.

Or you could get the latest SM58 Beta, which is a notch clearer and better than sm58. You could get it for 200SGD, the SM58 for about 120-150SGD.

yeah i second that sm58, its a really good piece of mic that you can't possibly go wrong with. Used by professionals all over the world and nicely priced too.

Kerplunk are you talking about this?

Also good for singing are Woods cough syrup and Robitussin EX. Similar to Pei Pa Koa, they cause extra lubrication in your vocal tract, making it easier to sing. Don't be surprised if you cough up a bit of phlegm a minute after taking - that'll be phlegm that was loosened and can now come out.

As for mics, I use a cheap phillips karaoke mic to record myself at home. I plug it directly into my pc.

Which reminds me, you'd need to get an interface if you're intending to record yourself at home using the sm58; doesn't work like a karaoke mic unfortunately :P This I learnt just a few weeks ago lol

YES ...GOOD CALL BY SAGE - Just remember that ppl tend to fart into mics in studios to test their timbre- so its best not to rely on wetwipes alone

oh cool. yeah i checked up shure sm58 a few days ago. i know this might sound a little amateurish to ask, since i might be focusing on looks and not the effectiveness of the mike alone, but what about the vintage looking ones. i checked up on the net but i never really found whether those were good or not? haha.

hi coeway,

perhaps you can elaborate a little bit more on the purpose of your quest. For home recording? for live use? budget? vintage looking u can find some Heil mics looking real vintage. there are also Violet / Blue / Electrovoice etc. but whats ur budget and current setup? some mics need phantom power etc cheers

woah fibredrive. haha. well the best would of course be for recordings and gigs and i know that dynamic is better for gig as it is hardier right? a condenser would be more delicate? just thought maybe i would like more advice on that.

i know it is rather superficial to be thinking of looks, but i always thought a vintage mike, like those squary silvery metalllic ones with lines, looked cool. However, i have no idea where to get it, besides ebay, and whether it is better than a shure sm 58 or other mikes.

budget 300. i guess.

violet mics (http://www.violet-design.com/) can be found at Resolute AV. sunshine plaza. I don't know if they have stock. saw it in their display window. unfortunately, none of it is available for $300. its at least 4 figures.

suppose the Shure 55sh series mic looks vintage as well (Shure - Microphones - 55SH Series II Vocal & Speech Microphone). but dunno how much it is. can check with Hung Bros on 3rd floor sim lim square.

Blue mics (BlueMic :: Blue Microphones) also look pretty vintage. but i dunno if there's anything sub-$300.

As for a mic fitting ur description, u might take a look at the CAD Equitek e100 mic. not avail locally i believe. CAD Professional Microphones - equitek e100 Supercardioid Condenser Microphone
but doubt its sub-$300 either.

well, if vintage squarish looks are not so impt, i would recommend u look at Studio Projects C1 mics. or Rode mics. Another interesting contender for really cheap (which i just ordered, and looks somewhat cheap vintage) is the MXL Marshall V67G. http://www.mxlmics.com/condenser_mic/mxlv67g/mxlv67g.htm

If LDCs are not possible, then the Shure SM58 as suggested.

hope this helps somewhat. cheers

i don't know if anyone actually uses a LDC mic for gigs. u may have to get 2 mics depending on ur usage. one ldc, one dynamic.

Hi, there many model/type of microphone out in the market. Names like Shure cant go wrong but there are many other brands like sennheiser, beyerdynamic, audio-technica etc.... But u can start with a reasonable price (est 100plus) dynamic microphone, cardioid pattern type.
Mic are personal stuff so prefered to have a personal mic. The studio mic is always badly abuse, being first line of amplification. Other than SM58 etc... can also look @ beyer OPUS29 or audio-technica MB3K. Good luck!
