Some thoughts for you...

I'm not a fan of neo-classical because I find that usually when people play it, it sounds more like malmsteen-metal - people tend to copy his style and ideas more so than to exercise the genre.

I always thought the term 'neo-classical" signified modern music drawing on influence from classical music as a whole but in neoclassical metal, it isn't the case.

Queen is an example of neo-classical done in a manner I think is more "open"... they have influences from classical music as a whole.

Neoclassical metal on the other hand tends to sound almost 1 dimensional to me.

Of course. YMMV.

Heh! How can you forget Randy Rhoads??? :(
And then there's YES!!! The problem with Malmsteen is that he is one-dimensional - speed and technique. Okay, so that's two. Anyways, hear one of his songs and you've heard all of him.
Don't forget that neo-classical is a genre. Malmsteen is only one proponent of it and obviously he has his shortcomings. But as a genre, neo-classical does provide some pretty cool music and does add a lot to a guitarist's repertoire, be it in terms of songwriting or soloing.

hi

And not to forget ..years back in the 80s there were some neo-classical players you can find off Rooadrunners production by Mike Varney like Marty friedman, Jason Becker, Joey Tafola, Tony Macalpine, Vinnie moore, Greg Howe(he did contribute some neo-classical style..but hes more on blues, jazz thing) , the band Apocrypha alot more i cant recall, others like Yngwei j Malmsteen of course, even Rithie Kotzen did play some neo-classical style here and there, Nuno Battencourt's "Bumble Bee Crash Landing" guitar solo, and even Europe's lead guitarist John Norum hes a neo classical player. Listen to them ull get lotsa of diff touch feel and ideas that would make u rich in "your vocab".
