Tuning a particular snare.

evident

I've been using a stock 14" steel bodied snare for some time now, and even though it's stock and cheap i can say it sounds pretty good. using a remo weatherking coated emperor head. cheap stuff.

but i just bought a Pearl 12" Firecracker Poplar snare. and i tried experimenting with ways to tune it but it still sounds too hollow. i changed the head to the remo fibreskyn 3 FA. and i tuned and tuned but it sounds poppy but hollow. i'm trying to get the warm, full, cracky and poppy sound. any recommendations from those who own, or have tried this particular snare. thanks a lot.

edit: i might have woken the neighbours at this inhumane hour by tuning my snare (i hope i didn't), and managed to get close to the sound i want. but i still hear a little too much ringing. any ideas how to get rid of it? should i get muffling foam and stick it to the other side of the skin, which means i have to remove and retune the snare. or should i use moongel. the remo tone control rings just don't cut it. or should i use 2 rings instead?

i say moon gel, got more placement choices, and also you could use more then one in different places

Perhaps you should try a coated ambassador coupled with ambassador snare side. Fyberskin Ambassador (FA) is the same weight as Emperor despite the name, hence the boxy sound.
Tune with the snares off and mute the opposite head. Both heads should be evenly tensioned at each lug including the snare side head. Try for a pitch interval of minor 3rd between both heads, top head being tighter.
I think that might solve the problem.
