Tubes

You can get Electro-Harmonix tubes at the wake me up shop (www.wakemeupmusic.com), they have a whole bunch of EH 12AX7s, and EL34s (or EL84, can't remember). No 6L6 though. What tubes are you looking for?

Personally, I'd suggest ordering in a set of JJ tubes, they're really really good. breathed new life into my hotrod deville :) you can probably internet-order them off any decent tube supplier.

Thank you thank you! Does WMUM sells JJ tubes? I was looking at some Telefunken NOS but they are pretty steep on eBay, not to mention after purchasing the paired power tubes a re-biasing is needed. I just wanna maybe swap out some preamp tubes first, hoping to get a different sound, though not necessarily for the better.

unfortunately WMUM doesn't sell JJs, don't think they'll be bringing in any additional EH tubes, unless you order direct from edwin. i got my JJs from a friend who was doing a consolidation order so I have no idea how he ordered his JJs.

EH tubes arent *too* far off from the JJs actually, maybe a tad less harmonic complexity but quite comparable to JJs IMHO. But i've not tried EH tubes in my HR Deville so i'm in no position to comment.

Anyone's ordered JJs online?

check out this place called burlington square next to sim lim. its got 2 tube shops on the ground floor. they got most brands. sovteks, eh etc so they should have some JJs as well. They have NOS but the price is slight more ex.They have a site but i forgot the url.

Might i ask y are u interested in NOS anyway?Cause they are basically old unused tubes. Their properties might not be as good as fresh tubes. Telefunken from what i noe is a gone brand in tube land.

What amp are u using?

Oh I was just kinda' bored and hence maybe I should do something to the amps. I'm running on a silver face bassman 70, but i will definitely not play with the power amp tubes.

I put Sed C winged 6L6GC into my bassman n boynit sound much nicer, good harmonics as well. The shops at burlington square dont have JJ 6L6s for ur bassman, only preamp and El34 tubes. Mullard preamp tubes only $20, but the guy at the shop is super ATTITUDE!!!

JJ can order from eurotubes.com, he seems to get alot of recommendation on US forums.

Changing preamp tubes only will not do very much of difference tho i think....

ordered the jj tubes... but havent had time to redo my amp... so teh tubes just sitting here... cant comment on the sound though as said..they are very highly recomended...

but the good thing is the shipping. Very fast. and very secure packaging. haha hope this is relevant.

hey chanmin. u ordered urs from eurotubes issit? any idea how much is the shipping charges? cant seem to find it on their site.

U got to email bob for it, he is very friendly. I wanted to get them as well, but got a much better deal for SEDs. U can tell him ur style of music, and he can select tubes either with more headroom, or early break up...

Also does give gd advice on amps

This is where I went before. Huge range of tubes. I had heard that the guy that had a bad attitude, but at my visit, he was nothing but nice, polite and helpful.

No lah Frankie just seems a little proud thats all. I've been there bunch of times ,no bad experience yet. If u buy the power tubes from him, he will even biase for u at no charge. His selection is a little lesser than the one next door but they are slightly cheaper. Most of the DIY audio buffs reccomend his shop.

Noob question. Which are the preamp tubes and which are the power amp tubes, are there differences at all? And whats fixed-bias? Thanks alot!

To keep it simple, preamp tubes r tube for the preamp section on the amp, power tubes are for the power amp of the amp which power up the speaker/cabinet.

Power tube is said to be needed to be rebaised when u change them, to protect the output transformer and for it to perform at the best level.

FOr more, try google. There r loads of info from pple who r more qualified to explain these things.

When the signal comes in from the guitar via the cable, it is very weak. It must be amplified up to something known as 'line level' for it to be usable. This is the job of the preamp - to bring the little signal generated by pickups to a decent level.

The job of making the signal even louder (incredibly F&*&@# louder) is provided by the power amp tubes.

Biasing (and I am no expert here) is to do with the differing voltages required for the different types of tubes to operate at their optimum condition. It has to do with modifying the potential difference between the tube plates or something.

Oh also, better to get matched power tubes for easier biasing. Does it actually do the difference? I dont know, but i know i dont want my output transformer to blow up like some say, and prolong my tube life.

N if it is supposed to improve the tone, then why not... If ur amp is fixed biased, u can actually do it urself with some apparatus.
