Tube Amplifier help!

Hey people i think that my Blackheart little Giant 5w Tube amp needs a replacement of tubes. I got it Second hand so it's about a year or two old and recently the volume has been fading in and out. Some fuzzy noises when i tweak the middle knob as well.

I've got a few enquiries i need help with,

Firstly, can i replace the single 12AX7 and EL84 myself?
Secondly, if i can how do i go about doing it? And if i can't is there somewhere i can bring it?

Thanks a bunch.

Hmm, fuzzy noises sounds like the middle knob needs to be cleaned with some contact cleaner, or the pot might have to be changed.

Yes you can replace the tubes by yourself, swapped them out immediately when i bought my VHT Special 6, no problems at all. Just unscrew the back plate and gently wiggle the tubes out and insert the new ones in! as easy as that.

If the problem doesn't lie with the tubes, I suggest you bring it down to Sound Alchemy to have them check it out for you.

The preamp tubes (12AX7) can be swapped without any biasing. The power tubes are cathode biased in the Little Giant, so it's also ok to simply swap, no biasing required. Just make sure the tubes are cool to touch before you touch them! Slowly wiggle the old tube out, align the pins properly for the new tube and shove it in.

If you really need to open up the chassis, pls take the neccessary precautions. The voltages inside can kill.

Thanks alot! I'm not quite sure where these tubes are available at though. Don't really see them in your regular
guitar shops. Are there any vendors at like peninsula?

Try checking out Martin Electronics in Burlington Square opposite Sim Lim Square. They are on the ground floor and carry Sovtek, EH and some other brands.

Mark.
