Travelling with your guitar

I know there was a thread on this SOMEWHERE, but I can't find it even with the search function. Yea, I'm headed off to HK on the 13th and I want to bring my guitar along, the climate there's pretty similar to here right now so i don't expect any neck warping, but, the thing is, I'm flying on economy class, so what have I got to do to bring my guitar onto the plane in a gig bag? I don't trust them baggage handlers!

Think with laws and security threats aplenty, that might be quite a problem. Invest in a hardcase and pray for the best?

erm i don't know if this works for electrics but the last time I brought my uncle's old classical guitar to SG the counter staff told me to bring it as hand luggage cause it was in a cloth bag (they don't want to take it into luggage cause they scared it breaks)

basically u go through the security checks and all (of course u have to open up the bag and let them see what they want to see) and then when you board the plane just leave it with the air stewardress, ask them to keep it for you, and they will stow it away nicely for you. Just remember to ask for it when you get off the plane

and yeah this was in like 2007 so it's with all those security threats and all that stuff

WAH, can do such a thing one arz... You sit wat class? skali first class they let you... then economy... sighz...

*edit* going to ny in another yr or so time too... thinking of bringing my kit over...

economy class dude. Silkair. So it's essentially like SIA. Really, it's a request you should make when checking in and it's really reasonable anyway.

But if you can get a hardcase you can probably feel safe asking them to stick multiple fragile stickers on it. There's a reason it exists because IT WORKS. Like if it is stuck on it and ur guitar cracks you can claim for compensation?

i've brought back guitar from another country before.
u have to either purchase a ticket for your guitar to "sit" (if u want your guitar in a gig bag and on board in the passenger cabin) or buy a hardcase and check it in.
these are the only 2 ways u can bring your guitar on board.
and do not worry, they will definitely paste a FRAGILE sticker on your hard case and will be stored along with other fragile items belonging to other passengers if u check your guitar in.

and bro if u need a hardcase, i'm willing to sell it to u at only $50.
it's a no brand case and i do not need it at all.
pm me your email and i can send some pics to u.
it's a case for strats/teles.

My guitar fitted perfectly in a soft case on the luggage cabinet above the seats. Shouldn't be too much of a problem.

which airlines let u do that ?!
SIA is very strict about bringing musical instruments up to the passengers' cabin.

ah well, expand budget to 200, should be able to find one... Dunno if they still sell the IC400 hardcases at sweelee because the damn guitar's outta production.

I took SIA, they weren't too strict.
I couldn't find a hardcase for my guitar, so had to carry it up. Damn shapes.

YAY i got a hardcase from kymbot, fits explorers and after some measurements, it apparently fits iceman guitars too! For those who don't know, the old IC400 is 110cm long, 35 cm wide, and the bloody headstock alone is 23cm.

When I took Tiger Airways from Manila in 2007, I bought a cheap hardcase and checked my guitar in. They pasted a fragile sticker and guitar and case came out without any scratch.

But after I check in on that flight, I saw another guy with an acoustic guitar in a very bulky Ovation hardcase. He didn't check-in his guitar and the crew allowed him to carry his guitar to the plane. He put it on the overhead compartment and I was suprised to see the whole thing fit in there.

On another time, I brought in a bass guitar. Didn't have time to look for a hardcase, so I bought 2 thick softcases, and wrapped one over the other. I put in some foam and carton to keep the neck steady, then checked that guitar in. Some scratches on the case, but the guitar went out fine. The customs officer in fact mistook it for a golf bag.

I guess, you're best bet is, buy a hardcase, then try to bring in.. If they don't allow you, then check-in.

i think the best option would be to carry it in a hard case, and try to bring up onto the plane, if not then check in.

try your very best not to check the guitar in, i've had a not so good experience where my acoustic (in a hard case) was checked in, and it came out with plenty of scratches and marks on the case. guitar was still intact. i pasted like 3-4 fragile stickers on it haha. when i saw the baggage people handle the guitar as if it's a samsonite, my heart broke haha.

not really la..my gf works in SIA...it actually depends on the crew..if they are in a good mood, they wouldnt mind stowing it with all the coats and jackets...but if they are lazy or aint in the mood..they'll just ask u to check-in the guitar...my gf always helps stow away guitars cos she understands how we guitarist feel when checked-in..the fragile sticker sometimes doesnt really help..it all depends on the ground crew aight...and apparently she has seen some really beautiful guitars..haha..just ask politely..explain ur problems to them..they might help u..dun demand and ask rudely as though u're sitting first class..
