Transporting of drums to a Venue

Hey Frank!

Glad to have you back. Dropped by the jam 2 Sundays ago, but you weren't there, bummer!

Anyway, the piano players also have their own beef. They contend with out-of-tune pianos, spoilt dampers, wrong seat height (Aya brings her own cushion!), digital pianos with artificial sounds. But yeah, won't the scene here would be an equal place if keyboardists had to lug their weighted 88-key digital pianos and amps to gigs? Hahaha!!

Guess if I didn't love drums so much, I would have stuck to playing the flute! :-D

Peace!

Some decades ago as the aspiring lead guitarist in my school pop band, I was persuaded to play the drums because someone else wanted to play lead (he was providing the Fender Amp)...and being the biggest chap in the band they thought I was the best joker to lug the drums around.

I do not lug drums around much anymore...but sometimes I wished maybe I should have stuck to the guitar !!

BTW I have resume my Jam master role since last Sunday..do come chill out if you have time.

Hi Bruce, how's things?

There are a few solutions me thinks and might I humbly suggest:-

Get a relatively small kit and play around with tuning for versatility. For example, I drove a very, very tiny car when I lived in Melbourne. I purchased the HipGig Al Foster where I could easily pack into 2 cases. All in all, I only had to make 3 trips from doorway to car: one for the main drum case, one for hardware case and one for cymbal case + Stick bag. So loading and unloading is relatively quick. Therefore, getting in and out of cabs shouldn't be too hard.

As for the sizes, I had a config of 10, 12, 14, 13 snare, 18 X 22" bass drum....so I can go jazzy and I can rock out too by tuning then differently.

Booking for transport here is not that difficult. Advanced bookings can be arranged with cab companies but if you intend to gig much with such arrangement, I would consider coordinating with small courier companies (which I once did). You spend a bit more (I found a company that charged $50 for 2 trips) but they help you load and unload (you just do the packing and unpacking). This way, you don't break your back!!

Hey Guys,

Yo Alvin, that kit sounded pretty huge for such a small kit if i remember rightly. especially the short stack toms. Very fun kit. Just goes to show that you don't necessarily need big drums to get a fat sound. You've just gotta know how to get the 'punch' out of them.

About using venues gear- In melbourne it's pretty damn rare for a venue to have a house kit, so when it does you tend to take advantage of it. I do play other drummers kits a fair bit though, when I know the other bands that are on the same night etc..

And I have to say that, for me, playing these kits has helped me get rid of most of my need to have my own gear to feel comfortable. You can really easily fall into the trap of only being able to sound like yourself on your own gear. I want to sound like myself no matter what kit i'm play.

I love playing my gear so I have all the stuff i chose but i also like being challenged by playing kits that might be a little less than perfect for me
