transporting amps and cabs - equipment

I am a total n00b at gig as I have never performed in a gig before. - just a hobbyist in a hobbyist band that plays in the studio.

anyways, I've been reading about people having to bring their own amps to gigs. I'm quite baffled, but because i have no experience in gigs.

My question is: the gig organizer don't provide amps?

If it's a street performance I can understand - you bring your own equipment, setup and just play.

but in bars and other performances, won't the organizer provide the amps?

it really depends from place to place, and also how anal u are abt your tone.

to me the amp makes a big, big difference in your tone. especially if you're the kind who likes to fiddly widdly with the tone controls on your amp to get your tone. when you play a gig on a different amp, you can forget about getting that tone back.

for me, i plug in and play flat. if got problem then i will adjust accordingly

well i dun usually bring amps cos i got no amps *grinz* always headphones thru the b2.1u. but recently i purchase a marshall mb15 for practice and it sucks major balls. cos most of the jam studio got hartke ;p and most of the gig i play got hartke ;p so its cool.

man.... hartke 3500a head + hartke 410xl cab, can't go wrong with that.

Many jam studio although use the 3500a head, but they use the cheaper lower quality 410 transporter cabs instead.

the xl cab is of a higher quality, and don't listen to other people crap about aluminium cones.

The stiffer and lighter the cone is, the more efficient, and the less distortion = aluminium. And the more accurate in reproduction of the sound, as there is less distortion of the cone as compared to paper.

But this is sound, which is subjective... so people may prefer less accurate reproduction in the sound, which is the "color".

To my ears, the hartke aluminium cones don't lose any low end at all... in fact, it's a more accurate reproduction of the low frequency.

And if I want color, that's what the 12ax7 tube does in the hartke 3500a amp head.

i would think that in a LIVE situation, tone doesn't matter too much right? Ok I agree tone matters definitely, but all the little nuances in the tone will be lost by ambient noise.

but true, by virute of anal means the person wants it perfect no matter

hartke amps not really my thing though... a personal preference kind of thing. the same reason i hate DR strings.

though one reason could be that i play a jazz bass that has a maple top, dimarzio pups, and stainless steel strings. to me alum cones reproduce frequencies so well (especially highs) that it sounds too hi-fi for my taste. in my situation an alum cone speaker is simply overkill, unless i'm going for stu hamm's tone (who happens to endorse hartke amps).

in a live situation tone still matters. maybe in terms of 0.0001db boost/cut it doesnt, but say for a jazz bass, different pup balances make a world of a difference. the 2 single coil pups on a bass surely have a purpose other than just to cancel out 60 cycle hum. alot of music uses generic bass tones, but if you play genres as diverse as reggae, punk rock and disco, tone matters a great deal.

it is especially true in a live setting, as it matters what the other instruments in your band are playing; how much distortion the guitarists use, how much of his kit your drummer uses... which could mean the difference between being too outstanding or drowned out. and it is important that you observe these details, because the layman will not know what's up with the band, all they will know is "this band sounds bad"

in fact i just got back from a studio using a hartke combo... and with my rig it was somehow equally as bright no matter what i did with the tone knob on my bass
