Tonelabs in general

So, while noodling on my guitar at midnight. i plugged my headphones into my tonelab le, turned the vol up and plugged into my soundcard and recorded some stuff, i was blown away, cuz going through my amp, which by chance is a roland jc 120, it sounds, in the words of the late frank zappa like an electric ham sandwich.

so i came to a conclusion. tonelabs, be it se or le, are ment for recording purposes and not amped up. and if you're gonna amp it up and have a good sound, then you're gonna have to risk killing your ear drums cuz i set the master level to about half, whereas through my amp it's about 1/4 of it and i cant go any louder or risk having people knocking at my door.

either that or i need to get a mixer to lower the volume of the tonelab down.

by the way i'm running into my effects loop so i dont have no amps master vol control. this is also another reason that has got me loins stirred to try out individual pedals and make full use of my jc 120. and leave my tonelab for recordings only.

true/false?

False. Quite a few people have use tonelabs live with gd results. Just that they usually don't run it through the amp. Do a quick search on youtube. Have to be run direct to p.a and u hear yourself though a monitor. At home best results is through the com or headphone out through your home stereo system. Usually a kb amp would suffice. Alternatively live u may want to run it through your kb amp.

Its the same with a pod xt live or any other modeller.

a problem with most multi efx is the issue of over preamplification though an amp, if you turn the amp modelling on. the multi efx's preamp plus the amp's preamp means that you get two times the preamplification, that could result in harsh(read: not too pleasant) frequencies.

I usually try to direct my Pod X3 Live into the house mixer -> PA and avoid pluging into a guitar amp.

Reason's simple. I tweak my overall sound though a pair of flat response monitor headphones at home and it sounds great. There's not much point of screwing up the whole thing by colouring my overall tone by plugging into a guitar amp again right?

Great tweaked sounds though flat response monitors at home have gooder results when plugging into an nicely eq'ed mixer/PA! Just blows every one away including myself when i stand next to the stage monitors! haha
