i'm just curious, is it possible to connect a electric guitar to the hi fi set at home or head phone?

You'll need something like a pocket POD or korg pandora I think. I don't think it works directly.

need a preamp/amp simulator.

The guitar signal is too weak to be amplified without the preamp/amp simulator(as mentioned, pocket pod or the korg pandora thingy).

geetar using mono plug and jack, those for hi fi/audio stuff using stereo jack and plug/rca connection usually, even if can plug in, the sound will come out from only one side of the speaker
