hey im deciding whether to buy a new guitar altogether or just to change the pick ups on my washburn x50 and get it set up. the reason why i want a change is that i feel the action is abit too high for my liking, and i would like a better sound. if i change pick ups i was thinking of getting dimarzios, either airnorton and tonezone, or evolutions, and does setting up a guitar really help that much? thanks so much in advance.

oh okay, then by all means get a proper set up 1st!

i don't think a washburn's quality can be that bad to be not worthy of a proper set up. its worth chaning the pups too if u know what kinda sound u want. :D

guitarave-define "better sound" , what are you aiming for? Take into consideration the EQ differences ie.Bass,Mids,Trebs.

Get your guitar properly setup first before deciding to change your pickups. If after setup the feel is still not good, then probably you can consider buying a guitar that feels good to you. If it feels good after setup, then you can change your pickups for better sounds. But then again, you must know what sounds you want and which pickups to get.

I suppose you are playing metal.

The difference in sound per se, due to a change in the action arguably negligible. Of course, if your action was previously so low that it's buzzing all over, then increasing the action would definitely yield a clearer, 'better' sound.

The idea that lower action equals better feel is arguable as well.
Lower action would generally allow you to play better, but I prefer a higher action to dig into the strings, and that to me is a better 'feel'.

A change of pups would definitely have an impact on your sound. If you are going for metal, some higher output pups would be suitable.

There are many factors affecting your sound, all the way from pups to strings, wood type to neck type.

i suppose to set up the guitar first...i couldnt play on my strat before beez set-up for me..now it plays like a dream...

i have a question.if i want my sound to be like trivium, should i change my pickups to theirs or should i get a multieffx.tanx

i say do NOT go for a direct copy of someone's tone, recreation of tone costs a bomb. etc, vintage amps etc etc etc etc. but a mfx allows you the freedom to play around with a range of effects. i do say its a pretty versatile option, as for pickups, that one depends on you, if youre not happy with your current one(NOT because you cant get someone's tone but cause it sounds horrid to you) then do consider changing.

changin jus the pups will only bring u a VERY small step closer to that persons tone...becos there r other factors like amps, effects, cables(haha),guitar
jus my 2cents worth

you can never sound the same anyways .
imo the finger calluses, current condition of strings , fretting spot before the frets are ever changing.
