They were both probably high on speedballs when this video was shot.
Taken from Anthony Kiedies' autobiography, i try to remember what he said: Chad smith was introduced to the band as a guy who ate drums for breakfast ... He wasn't like the rest, he had long hair and wore guns n roses t shirts and stuff .. then like usual, they tried to audition him .. During the auditioning, flea played and chad smith had to like play along and outplay him.. usually when flea does this, most drummers just give up, cause its difficult to outplay him ... But chad kept coming up with more chops and he was damn good so they recruited him ...
