hey guys! Im gonna shift out end of this year to another place. HDB and the highest floor. I plan to make one of the rooms soundproof. OR any idea how to cut off sound from the drums/guitars/piano? Soundproofing makes a room smaller. Which idea do u think is better?

1)Build a platform for the drumset to prevent sound from travelling donwards.1k-1.5k
2)Glass shield. A few thousand.
3)Sound proofing whole room6k-10k.
4)egg trays. they reflect sound not absorb.
5)Heavy drape curtains. Whole room around $900-$1k.

Should i have a combination of 1),4),5)?
Then again if i stick egg trays will it be nice? and alottt of glue will be used right?

Studio not for recording purposes.
Of course i can use drumutes and what not. But i want the acoustic feel lah.. haha. I really dont want electronic kit. Its really somehow diff from acoustic kit plus all my cymbals.

Electric/acoustic gutiars not really a problem cause can adjust volume of amps.
Piano cannot la. but should be softer than drums.
So main problem:DRUMS and the cymbals.

What are your views on this? really need help!
Anyone know ppl/friends who provide cheaper soundproofing or sell the platform?
i need sound to cut off at least 70%-80%.
If u selling platform, glass shield or any soundproofing material can contact me also la. at 90218242. then again just need information on this.

IM SURE SOFTIES ARE NICE AND HELPFUL RIGHT???? :))))))

Cheers to everyone!!!

drum

double glazed window for 4 panel 700.This type of window is casement window and uses 2 glass pane on one window.Change the door to a panel wooden door with rock wool inside 800.If u glue with egg tray and decide not to use it anymore u cannot paint the wall.U have to sandpaper the whole wall. Now my wall has a thousand glue mark and I been saying to myself for almost a year to do it but to no avail

hey retarddrummer the elevated platform can be build around $400 dollars.

I think this is the most important aspect (out of the 5) which u need. Since u will be at the top floor, the other sounds(cymbals, snare, tom) which tend to travel out and upwards will not be much of a problem.. the most important drum to control is the bass drum..

after building the playform can then do the curtains and acoustic foam.. make sure they are the absorbing sound one, u definitely wanna reduce relfecting sound in an already so small room, oh hope u have air condition too since otherwise it will be hot if close windows haha

if STILL loud to you(and others) can use the tontine method by alvin =)

any personally i dun really care disturb others or not i only scared disturb my own family hehe

IM SURE SOFTIES ARE NICE AND HELPFUL RIGHT???? :))))))

hmmm, are you ready to engage a professional on this and have it done with contractors ?

Hey just adding on to the topic, are there any like foams or stuff I can buy to just put on the walls, like without any additional layer over them? I'm already getting like soundproof windows and curtains, but if it's not too costly I would like to get some foam or something as well

yes there is. acoustic foam per slab S$120 (one surface corrugated like egg crates, 1 side flat, thickness approx 60mm or customizable) area per piece 42inch x 75inch. above price for 1 unit (bulk order = cheaper).

approx acoustic characteristics
500Hz - 16kHz --> absorption index 0.25 to 0.45.

Just for information, the curtains are more expensive then your projected budget... Unless you are planning to get those that do not have acoustic dampening effect. That being said, it will be of no use if get the cheap non acoustic dampening curtains or drapes.

I was considering doing up a wall (Just a wall not the entire room) the quote came up to about 1.5 to 1.8K. To deaden your rooms acoustics to an acceptable level, you need to buy or fabricate some rockwool panels... Do some soundproofing research on the net... there's tons of it!! Even youtube there are people video their process of fabricating the rockwool panels and how to deal with the room acoustics.

You will need contractors to get it soundproof unless you DIY but its not 100% soundproof. Even DIY will cost you about 2K
Enjoy and spend lots of money!! haha

the foam is made as per order. i do sell them, so you need to email me formerly officially if interested (issue reciept etc).

jus curious, being new to this forum ... am i allowed to say i can sell the foamy stuff here? lol

I'm not much into sound proofing, but since rock wool is mentioned, I might as well join in. I'm currently building my own bass traps and broadband absorption panels. It'll have aluminium frames and the sides are exposed. I don't think I've seen anyone DIYing a panel this way, not on gearslutz or johnlsayers. Stay tuned.

Just for comparison, an Auralex kit for my room would cost 300-350% more. Nothing beats doing a heck of research and building your own.

BTW, Accesscoms, your foam has pretty weak stats (i.e. 500Hz - 16kHz --> absorption index 0.25 to 0.45.). So why is it priced so high? A 4' x 2' slab of Bradford Fibertex 350 rock wool costs RM22 (SGD9) and it's got better sound absorption coefficients. I don't mean to put you down but I'm curious how your price is justified.

i would juz build a platform of different layers. Should be enuff to prevent quite a lot of sound from travelling downwards. Depending on wat kind of style u play also. If u whack dam hard, ur neighbours will still hear the kick drum. juz close ur windows and make sure they are double-glazed can already. Den u can use the drapes as decoration to ur room. Give it some cosy and chill out feeling. The only way to sound proof is to build a room in a room. bass traps and all are pretty useless. They are just used for treating the room.

Agree with 10u5y...
Most of us think by dampening or treating the rooms acoustics is considered soundproofing. But in actual fact it's a totally different issue altogether. To soundproof is to build a room in a room. That's to totally cut out both outside and inside sound. U will not disturb people n the outside sound will not interfere your recording. Even after doing that you will still need to deal with the room acoustics. That's where the foams and basstraps comes into place.

As for the foam or rockwool panel that one of the bro mentioned, I agree the foams are far too expensive. The egg shape foams are actually very cheap material that can be bought fairly easy. I have used some in my kick drum for dampening. As for wool panel, i've diy myself. U can check it out in the show your drumkit section where I have posted my kit.

yea i know rockwool is cheap i think i will buy the RM22 from you lol got free delivery? lol joking joking

... but it is not a finished product :D ... and its ... very ... very itchy .... lol.... i do not think anyone will stick a slab expose to skin in this way around the practice areas, working with rockwool carries a respiratory risk too. moreover if you calculate your own manpower costs and other materials and tools to create a finished product that looks at least pleasing to the eye ... it aint cheap actually :D ... even in RM currency right?

actually i think you should compare orange with orange ... foam with foam .... commercial foam branded panels are not cheap :p ... BUT aesthetically they look really good and if you like branded stuff, there is no looking back there.

yea what lou5y and lummer said is true, perfect scenario will be to isolate the sound space totally from outside "world". however to reduce cost --> will be to focus isolation on the instrument itself. as per whats said above : platform properly done ... slight dampening of the room, "sealing" off sound "leakages" to the "outside" world by paying attention to doors windows etc. easy ways are make those double glaze etc, depending on how it is done ... in whichever ways it does do some attenuation to the resultant noise leaking out.

DIY methods if you have the means to do it, is a very rewarding experience, i have experienced this before too 20 years ago lol, the feeling is damn shiok. but for those who want to grab something pre-build, do make use of me :D

Based on what you have said, the foam is also not consider a finished product isn't? U will still need to fasten onto a panel to be mounted unless you are talking about glueing it direct onto the walls. That again is to only treat the acoustics of the room and the dampening properties are far from using rock wool. I've build my own 12 rock wool panel and taking into consideration all the tools, material, rock wool, fabric to wrap the panel and the wooden case for the rock wool... ah... not forgetting all the beers and nice food that was involved during the process do not cost me more then 1K. And the fact that people considering DIY is to lower the cost and therefore won't mind putting in some efforts to get it done.
Here is the link to my drumkit picture. the wall that is facing the drumkit are the rock wool panels. i also have them behind me and left and right side of the kit.

That is basically for information purpose. The bottom line is, rock wool is one of the best product to dampen and treat the acoustics in a room. Even those product you see in the market are rock wool, its just that the packaging is nicely done, wrapped in a nice fabric.

hmmm the foam is like commercial foam ... it is actually an end product. you can actually stick it on the wall. or cut it up curve it around corners etc which would be more tedious to do using framing and wool. the key in using this will be ease of use and do not need much tools and its not messy.

to me alot of thought goes into what is the resultant effect to be achieved and what can be done, anyway .. i love both foam n wools :D and of cos many other usable materials.

what you said is true, DIY of cos can save cost.
btw how much time you spend on the pictured?

n BTW nice setup you have :D *thumbs up*

Actually don't get me wrong... It's basically a discussion forum so just pointing out some stuff so can share. I do agree the foams are very useful for areas that you mentioned. its great to treat corner areas that you can obviously hear the ringing from.

All the wooden case was done by a contractor and very very cheap price!!!! The rest of the process took me 2 sessions to get it done, about 4hrs per session. After which the difficult part is to mount it on the wall. Plenty of measurements needed to get it all straightly align which is not easy to deal with especially HDB walls... But i would say all done up took me about 4 sessions of 4hrs.

Thanks... for the compliment... its a great sounding drums too...

All in good spirit :D, its good to know there are people like you who are already handy with DIY acoustics, all that we have spoken will be good info for all those who are keen to try :D

btw im not familiar with the drum cage you are using .. .what are those? they look like really nice big square rails going around the entire drum. are they custom by your self?

No lar... The drum rack (as u have referred it as cage) is from pearl. It's a 3 sided curve tom rack.
