Dear All,

Need your advice on the problems that my friend had since he bought the Timothy SJ10 recently. I hope this is the right place to post.

My friend was looking for a guitar and i recommended Timothy as i bought one a few years ago and think its quite a good guitar for that price.

2 weeks after he bought it, played less than 5 times and he was having problem with tunning the 3rd strings, it seems that the tunning pegs or what ever you call it is not working. Disappointed, he went back to the shop and was told to leave it there for repair, he got it back after a month. At the shop he tested the 3rd strings and he was able to tune, happily he went home but not for long, as now the 6th strings is unable to tune, same problem he had with the 3rd strings previously. Now he is really disappointed with the guitar as there seems to be no end to the problem. The guitar actually spend more time in the workshop than in his hands since the day he bought it.

Has the quality of the guitar drop? or he is really 'suay' and got a lemon.
what should he do? He is really sad now :( do you think he can request for them to change another guitar? maybe to another brand.........

did the shop say what was the problem that was fixed?
if the tuners are indeed faulty, no point fixing it as those usually need to be replaced.

and is your friend stretching the strings or stringing up properly?

Timothys are completely hand-made, so there's always the risk of hidden faults... Some electrics have malfunctioning tone knobs, some acoustics have tuner problems.

My acoustic has a minor tuning peg problem also, but mine is because the entire peg is loose and it doesn't look repairable.

But as Everdying says, there's also a lot of other factors, and the string must be fitted properly otherwise problems will occur. I know this from personal experience...

Based on what you've described keep going back till it is resolved and ask/understand from the tech why is it like that?

User error(Likely)? Tuner quality? Bridge pin error?

Thanks Edder, Eugenesmasher and Everdying (all start with E) :) for the advice.

I did not ask him what they say was the fault, do you think the problem will be solve if they change the whole set of tunning pegs?

How to stretch the strings properly?
