hey folks,wonder if eric johnson uses the thumb pick in the song manhattan. please help enlighten me if u do know.thanks!

I don't think so. Should be a mix of hybrid picking.

^^ hybrid picking is where you fuse normal 'pick' picking and fingerpicking together. how? hold the pick like normal. then use your middle and ring finger to do finger picking.so you are not only limited to the use of your pick to strike the strings. can use your fingers too. i personally use it sometimes. add more feel to your playing imo 8)

i think some people train rreally hard to use their pinky too... but i think its really quite a crazy feat which requires a lot of prac... tried before but abandoned the idea after a week of no progress... haha

^^ woah you used ur pinky?! even classical ppl dont use their pinky. hard to control the pinky ah. sometimes short circuit, then it starts doing it's own stuff then you get cramps

so u just use thumbpicks now if i need sumthing liddat... but thumb pick cannot do pinch harmonics.. lol

You don't relaly need a thimbpick unless you are picking very fast with the thumb - mostly country style picking. You can also get by with your nails for that. Hybrid picking using the fingers, no picks at all, is the best way to play the guitar - ultra versatile and beats any other pick or technique out there - IMHO.

Hmm.

the craziest artificial harmonics I have ever done was while using a New zealand 50 cent coin (which is friggin huge).

but it was also incredibly heavy :lol:

maybe that's why gilly gibbons can create his artificial harmonic extravaganza on 'La Grange'? He uses a mexican coin as a pick.
