A lot of those bands were labelled as Metal bands probably before you were born. Actually peoples perception of what Metal is in 2006 is a LOT different to what it was in 1984. The Heavy Metal label was given to bands like Judas Preist, Maiden and Def Leppard when they started cracking the US market. Collectively they were labelled the NWOBHM, New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Kinda like how RnB in 2006 is nothing like the original RnB from people like Aretha Franklin.
