The Verdict: Modified BOSS DS-1 pedals

Hi All,

Recently I got a used JHS Boss DS-1 through Ebay for cheap, despite a Beez Mod DS-1 (LookforBeez) that I often play with.

I plugged the JHS Boss DS-1 to my Guitar and Amp yesterday, and to my surprise it is so identical to Beez's Mod.
So, I placed both my DS-1s side by side into an ABY switching pedal to see if both really did the same job.

Well, Beez Mod was doing just what JHS could. Okay, if you guys want to go spend that extra $$$ on JHS because of looks, go ahead. But the bottom line is that Beez Mod just does the same. So why spend extra $$$

Next up, I would like to know outcome of an Analogman DS-1 and Keeley DS-1 versus JHS/Beez Mod DS-1.

I am sure that the Monte Allum Mod Boss DS-1 is rare, but someone on this forum may have tested it.

So there is still time for a Verdict ..... Cheers~

Great review. Just shows that not all boutique pedals are worth the cash.

Off topic question but is BEEZ now in Peninsula Exelsior? I think I saw him once there fixing a guitar...

For what it's worth we have to compare apples to apples. Just by assuming all mods are equal is completely not objective at all. If Beez mod the same components as the JHS of cos they will sound similar. The variations in the components used between two pedals matters a lot.

I opened up the back panels of both my DS-1 pedals to compare and check for similarity of components/circuit. I would say Beez has a better hand at things in that Beez mod DS-1. The JHS looked like a mess inside :# and a little shoddily worked. Sorry did not get pictures for you guys but yeah go support Beez instead, our local guitarist Hero, a.k.a The accomplished ex-Yamaha guitar tech ;)
