"The tone is in your fingers"

u guys realise that you're all going round and round in circles saying the same thing phrased differently.

Not necessarily. Seems that there are a few folks who just don't get it. Therefore, phrasing it in such a way that all would understand would have been nice - looks like there's still some work to be done.

but gear still comes into play..for example you can have really good finger tone but i can plug you into a really lousy amp..cut all the bass and you would still sound funny even with good finger tone.

Then you might as well switch off the amp.

The moral of the story is two-fold -
1) Good finger techniques are crucial under any realistic scenario
2) A decent gear is all that is required if point (1) above, is a given.

The best gear with poor finger techniques gets you nowhere.
Cheers

Nonsense...If the amp is set up to sound bad, no one can sound good. But who would do that? Idiots.

If everything was set up nicely, and still sound bad. Then its lack of practice, and probably posting too much on forums without being able to back their words up! Post on!

^^ Couldn't have said it better.

aye, cheers reyrey.

SO STOP READING THIS AND GO PRACTICE. *unsubscribes from thread*

i am really sad seeing people give phases like "shut up", it only go to show that you are not here to help someone clearing doubt, not here to give encouragement. this is never the attitude of a good musician. so what if you have good skill? you are not going anywhere with this mindset in you, friend.

not to take sides or to detract from the thread but

moral of the thread: just shut up and play?

the question mark meant that it was a suggestive suggestion to stop posting and go practice playing

anw this topic is retardedly controversial and a lot of people have feel strongly on their views on this, anw cheers and dun fite

tgcpsgoh: hey buddy,no offense yeah,i got serious attitude problem, haha, sorry la
you want to know what's tone?go practice like mad untill your fingertips got blister, then we can talk about it

i think otherwise. tgcpsgoh has obviously missed the point of the "shut up" and other phrases used and their context.

either way, i don't think any of us need to apologise. ADVICE is given, but sometimes the best advice is the advice to shutup-and-go-practice. shoot first ask questions later.

please don't start a debate over what i've just said. cuz i know a debate is gonna start up somehow. or maybe i should just shut up this post too. lol,

cheers.

The BEST thing about shooting someone down in a forum as opposed to using a real gun is that no one dies, but everybody gets to learn a thing or two.

IMHO, the best answers given to this topic so far has been 'shut up', in one form or another (go practice and find out for yourself).

Had this thead gone to discuss things like relying on amps, compression, string-type (rounds, flats, hybrids), or even type-of-bass (passive up to 27V-pre), to determine tone via various nuances and styles of attack for bass playing, I'd probably have alot more to say than 'go practice'.

Forgive me if I sound uppety, but debating whether 'tone is in the fingers' or not, is pretty damn elementary, and equivalent to telling a new player to go try the bass for himself instead of asking if there is a pre-fixed formula for choosing basses for individuals.

Have fun, explore and discuss, keep the cycle going, and we'll all have alot more things to inspire us via learning!

i am serious but not here to debate. just hope that we give our view with a little respect to the others. even if we think that to do it is more practical that to talk, please said it in a proper way.

Should you feel that you are uppety then you shouldn't have jumped into this thread. This is, as a few of us know, is very much something newbies are accustomed to asking.

I would be amazed if any of the uppedies never thought of such a question before they felt that they were uppedies.

Live and let live. This was a useful thread for the one who started it and perhaps for many who may have jumped in to 'listen'. Should any one feel that they are are uppedy then they should very well show it instead of saying so. That is a given.

We await. And if it is not due, then please leave threads like these alone so that musicians and alike can take something fruitful from their time at Soft - instead of listening to some uppedy wannabe telling all that we're his children.

Bestest - and Fight the Good Fight.

why all the hate man chill. i seriously find the word tone very subjective. I think a good tone on the bass is one that cuts through everything in the mix and it suits the song your playing. Like you cannot have a good rock tone on a jazz session or vice versa it won't cut it and it would bring the whole song down. The fingers play a part cause how u attack ur strings and how much strength u put in can actually define the tone. play nearer to the neck pick slightly softer and boom boom u get a nice fat rnb and pop tone, if you want it more punchy just pluck nearer to the bridge and you can roughly get that nice punchy tone for funk. If u pluck slightly softer at the bridge u can get a nice cutting jazz solo tone aswell. well, it works for me.

To follow up on what the guys have said earlier, crispyegg, who is a good fren of mine and wonderful bassist and 3notes who i have heard alot about his playing, what they said no matter how harshly put is correct, just shut up and practice, its honestly the best advice anybody can give, its not about attitude its about what would help and practicing is the key. i can tell u hey u can play ard this area, that area or i can say ur fingers can play at this part and blah blah blah, what body wood, picksups, blah blah blah, but if u dont practice, your tone will always remain the same.

thats my 2 cents worth. sorry for the long post. and thanks for reading.
