It was fantastic! Despite the ages of Sting (55, Bass/Vocals), Andy Summers (65, Guitars/Backing Vocals) and Stewart Copeland (55, Drums/Percussion/Vocals), the Police rocked out so hard and tight for close to 2 hours! They sounded so good, it was hard to believe it was only 3 of them on stage... my only grip was the live sound... it could have been mixed better... too harsh, very muddy mix, etc...
Sting was in fine form, his voice was so strong and on pitch - he could definitely hit the high notes. Stewart Copeland was so sublime and fantastic with his drumming - he creates such a distinctive style which IMHO, is the backbone of the Police sound... and my favourite, Andy Summers... played so creatively, passionately and sometimes, outwardly (cos he used lots of jazz scales and modes). Nonetheless, it was a treat for me, especially hearing Andy's solos!
I definitely have a new found appreciation of the band after seeing them play live! Having seen my childhood rock heroes in action was definitely a treat - I hope that they would continue and at least do a new studio album... I can only hope.
The $100 tickets (cheapest of all) wasn't too bad. I was about halfway from the stage, on the left side. As I was seated in the gallery section, I had a fantastic view of the stage and also the fans on the floor. I also had a really big video screen which I could see so easily.
The setlist the best I could remember is:
Message In A Bottle
Synchronicity II
Walking on the Moon
Voices Inside My Head / When The World Is Running Down
Don't Stand So Close to Me
Driven To Tears
Hole In My Life
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
Wrapped Around Your Finger
De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da
Invisible Sun
Walking In Your Footsteps
Can't Stand Losing You/Reggatta De Blanc
Roxanne
Encore
King of Pain
So Lonely
Every Breath You Take
Next To You
Wish they could have played "Tea in the Sahara" as it's one of my faves...
Hope that a bootleg of the concert would surface so I can keep it for rememberance.
It was also cool to have caught Fiction Plane - the opening act. I think they did really well... it's definitely a challenge to play in front of a restless crowd who do not know who you are and do not know your songs. It was after the concert that I realised that the frontman of the band was actually Sting's son - Joe Sumner.
Another thing that was really cool for me was sitting next to a Ang Mor grandmother, she could be in her 70s, I think... she was really enjoying herself - swaying her body from her seat and tapping her feet, nodding her head, etc... wow! That's amazing for me... I hope to be as active and curious and interested about things when I'm her age (if I ever survive that long). Fantastic!
