the movie drumline

Not to sound like an ass here, but the movie gives off bad vibes... it makes people think that marching bands are all about cheesy rap transcriptions and stick tricks.

The drumlines were also messy as hell. The purple ones at the end were MUCH cleaner than the orange ones. When I heard that the orange ones won, i was WTF??? Any overpaid judge could tell that the purple ones OWNED the orange ones.

Ice cream?

Hi Funkifized,
I watched the movie, my friends did too. Sure man we were bowled over. But we know the hard work involved, and the memory work...jesus I dont think my brain can handle that kinda motor skills. Plus the players showed passion man.
Well in the end, its a feel good movie. Just so happens they use marching bands as a theme this time round.

Cheers everyone
Darren

there are outlets all over the island. Sixth avenue, and Cold storage jelita are two around the bukit timah area.

I just finished watching it. maybe it's just the n00b in me but I was watching and I was like, whoa. I'll never be able to do anything like that with a snare, or any kinda drum! and I don't think Morris Brown owned A&T. Cos the drumlines sounded equally clean to me--it was because Morris Brown (purple) went and played on A&T's (orange's) snares. You don't do something like that. No way.

You should listen harder. The orange drumlines had very very messy snares. They should sounds as ONE line, not a bunch of messy snare hits. In this aspect, the purple drumline was MUCH cleaner. It has nothing to do with what they did to the other drumline's snares. It has to do with the technical facility of the drumline as a whole.

To put it into comparison/perspective, the purple drumline was somewhat like a groove that had the the hihat and bass and snare hits almost completely lined up with each other. The orange ones however had their snare or bass hits slightly off most of the time.

hmmm...good point but the competition was about showmanship too, not just technical perfection. no matter how well you play if you act arrogant like Morris Brown did then you lose. this kinda show, the heros have to win anyhow. I think the reason for the technical imperfection might've been that the people on the A&T team were actors not chosen for technical ability but the Morris Brown people were a real band. or something like that.

The stuff you see and hear on Drumline may seem pretty impressive to us here where drum corps is pretty much non-existent...

But if you get a chance to see the REAL stuff, i think you realise the stuff on Drumline is pretty amateur... There are DVDs available of the DCI World Championships (its not really a WORLD championship though, just a US thing), where if you catch the performances of corps such as the Blue Devils, SC Vanguard etc, your jaw will definitely drop to the floor... 1000x better than Drumline...

yah i felt that the Morris Brown drumline should win. they were so much better. but then. i don't really bother about who wins. wat mattered to me was wat i can learn from that movie. after watching that movie, i immediately switched to traditional grip. and manage to learn the stick tricks from the movie. and u feel a sense of achievenment. but then. yah there are like a thousand more stick tricks la. drumline is awesome with the back ground music and all. but the real shit lies in marching bands like the cavaliers, blue devils and all those la..

huh? I watched Drumline and I realised I can't do HALF of what they do in the show. my class at Yamaha has not touched anything like that. tried it on my own and it sounds terrible. goodness. and now you tell me there's stuff a hundred times better than Drumline.

stick tricks aren't really very impt. it will matter to your band more how you play rather than how flashy you are :) however it is impt to have a good grip and technique (i am guilty of not having a good one haha).

just remember that when you start off with something new many things will sound difficult and will be difficult. but as you progress, you will find that your thinking changes. just press on and try to enjoy the drums :)

sheesh. i talk like i'm some pro. :p
