hey guys. I just want to start a thread that what leads you to play instruments be it guitar, bass, drums, keyboards.. etc..

i had never seen any thread like this before so i hope everyone can share there personal view. Be it Motive, Aim, Target.... what every drove you to learn or to play better.

So i get the ball rolling...

basically i started to play a instrument cause my friend wanted to. so i tagged along. its been a while and i played guitar on and off.. But what really drove me back to play guitar or turn myself back to music is after knowing the death of DIMEBAG DARREL. It really drove me back to play cause he is really a person who is look up upon. How could the idiot kill him?! i am still wondering...

This is my humble background. thanks and post yours too.

cheers and thanks for reading

sorry...
i'll make it more clearly like..

some people learn guitar JUST to woo gals.
OR some people learn due to peer . (like me)
OR some people learn for fun
OR some people learn to kill time..

something like this.. yeah.

I learnt after listening to old skool Metallica compilation that my sister's ex made. That was like more than 10 yrs ago.

Hmm.

I play several instruments, first and foremost is the acoustic guitar. I suppose my main influences on starting out were Neil Young and The Eagles. When I discovered more of the Eagles and I listened to Queen, I realised that I wanted to move on to the electric guitar, but I never really abandoned the acoustic for a second.

My electric guitar phase included a strong influence from Jimmy Page, Angus Young and Brian May. Now I'm listening to loads of Hendrix just to soak in his feel, emotion and choice of notes.

The next phase in my acoustic guitar journey was the re-discovery of country music... I soon picked up the blues harp, but played it in folk style like Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Soon thereafter I picked up the mandolin to allow further avenues of musical outlet.

The bass came naturally because I was interested in the co-relation between the different aural spectrums and how they interacted with each other in both a band situation and in a recorded mix.

it's slightly irrelevant, but I tried to pick up the guitar 7 years ago, I spent 2 years trying to remember the chords of "Green Day - Basketcase" and I still play it wrong. I type anywhere from 68wpm (words per minute) to 108 wpm blindfolded but I don't have the "musical" thing in me to pick up keyboards too. i'm too flat toned/limited vocal range to be a vocalist in a band.

so these lame attempts made me wanna pick up the mic and miking up the instrument/amp instead.

thank you for reading and bye bye.

you left out the "learn because i got inspired"

but anyway, i picked up guitar for fun, and also to pass time lah. all self taught, never really attended classes, but slowly i guess through listening to more genres, you get inspired and you take your music more seriously. after that a group of friends formed a band, and broke up, and another band, and broke up and another and broke up.

so now, since im bandless, i just spend time improving speed, technique, smoothness and all (after all, we can never be too satisfied). after a year of playing emoish indieish stuff. moved on to old school rock and now, more of blues. all along its just been a learning curve (and it still is). i think the eric clapton and BB king album inspired me the most though.

oh yeah, actually my earlier post meant "why I picked up audio recording due to lame attempts on instruments." and I wanted to learn the guitar because I dig greenday when I was young. playing in a band seems so fun.

I first picked up piano 3 years ago upon see Maksim perform. Was ridiculed by my secondary school "friends" because I listened to "piano orientated pop music" while they listened to Blink 182 and the likes.

I had an ex classmate who listened who listened to loads of metal music who never looked down on me for wanting to learn the piano as compared to the other punk rock idiots around. My respect goes out to him. I guess that's why I'm so into metal music now.

This is one of the main reasons that eggs me to strive hard on my piano because I swear that one day I'll work my guts out to be much better than them in music. And I think I've already accomplished that because 3 years on , they are still wasting their time and money in the jamming studio "discussing" on what songs to play throughout the entire jamming duration instead of making music together.

Actually as egoistic as it may sound , the reason why I strive hard on my musicianship is that I really want to prove my worth to those who looked down on me during my infant years of music and really show them what I'm made of.

Cheers

I picked up guitar because I wanted to learn Green Day's Basket Case. (Got sucked into Green Day land because of American Idiot). My friend taught me a few basic chords and stuff...tried not to look at the fretboard and all that and bam! After 5 months, I learnt Basket Case! And tons of other Green Day songs, haha...

So there...Billie Joe Armstrong is my inspiration. Oh yea...after watching Basket Case's MTV...I just knew I had to learn guitar...

Hmm.

LOL I've seen one guy play a tambourine and he was just so into the groove of the song, he looked as though he was at the point of being orgasmic.

*ching ching ching*

been playing piano from 8 .... it's been awfully 13 years man ..... hahahaha =)

was force by mum to learn ....
get inspired to be classical pianist .....
graduated with diploma in piano performance ......
was sick with classical music scene .......
so i was astray ...
playing keyboards ......
and improvising ......
and end up into jazz fusion ...

why i'm still playing is because music is already my life ...
can't, don't want, and won't throw it away .....

i play, cuz i love it ... and can't life without it .....

i would have to say, a chronic sense of dissatisfaction with the way life was going, and also a rather depressing inclination to not want to go out much/talk to people/meet new people. basically, losing the cog to socialise.

anyway, it just made sense. and i figured i'd work at it(still am) until One Fine Day comes where the product of my invisibility(or reason for, rather) shall lay limpid for all to see.

and then i'll be able to say things like "success validates everything"
hahahahaha
