Yup, I think especially in something like music, no one's really 'self taught' per se -- you always have to have a starting point and learn from somebody, even if they aren't teaching you directly, including of course listening to their playing. And while many people assume that many good musicians aren't "educated", many of the greats - Steve Vai, the whole of Dream Theater, Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs, John Mayer, Ben Folds, even The Click Five (etc. etc. just to name a few, Jazz has even more), are all Berklee or Miami degree holders, or at least attended music at college level. To some extent, I think everyone is self-taught -- what else is studying, really -- but I think having someone better than you to guide you or even just show you one or two tricks, even more so in a full-blown music education, can make someone talented into someone who can use his talent to its full potential. And there's only so much you can pick up from watching -- just 30 minutes a week with a really good musician friend of mine stuff has taught me a lot (not that i'm a great or anything, but just sharing); don't think we should discount a music education so easily.
