Well said but I am hopeful that no one impinges on your right to your opinions.

They internalize what they have learnt from others and come up with something new on their own.

Yup, I think especially in something like music, no one's really 'self taught' per se -- you always have to have a starting point and learn from somebody, even if they aren't teaching you directly, including of course listening to their playing. And while many people assume that many good musicians aren't "educated", many of the greats - Steve Vai, the whole of Dream Theater, Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs, John Mayer, Ben Folds, even The Click Five (etc. etc. just to name a few, Jazz has even more), are all Berklee or Miami degree holders, or at least attended music at college level. To some extent, I think everyone is self-taught -- what else is studying, really -- but I think having someone better than you to guide you or even just show you one or two tricks, even more so in a full-blown music education, can make someone talented into someone who can use his talent to its full potential. And there's only so much you can pick up from watching -- just 30 minutes a week with a really good musician friend of mine stuff has taught me a lot (not that i'm a great or anything, but just sharing); don't think we should discount a music education so easily.

i agree. was thinking of going to berklee to study but no $. ultimately i think it's about how hard you push yourself and how willing you are to learn and experiment. been taking piano lessons since 5 or 6 and stopped at 16 after getting my grade 8. can't say i'm a big fan of classical but i'm looking into yoshiki from x japan's music. hope to get a band and compose some songs too.

I started on classical piano at age 12...quit even before hitting grade one...so boring..hehe...and also no piano at home...sigh...

Then mother bought a piano, start playing like crazy all those richard clayderman stuff...quite easy to pick up by ear.....

After a while, realised not cool to play RC stuff...LH always the same...hehe

Then try to play Beethoven Piano sonata no. 8 in Cm cause I love that pc to death...even though I can't really sight-read....have to shade all the # to ease sight-reading...just practise like mad...but manage to complete first movement of the first page only...haha...

So messy...

I play guitar more...so using the theory of guitar which is basically the same..all music theory..manage to pull it off on the piano...

Keys are always amazing..so many sounds to play with....I have a Yamaha SY77, P200 ,a Motif 8...just love all those sounds....but all sold....now just have a cheap PSR for fun at home...hehe

I know this thread was started last year and I hope I'm not that late. Hee! I play the keyboard too. I started playing like 4 months ago.. I learn from Guitar Pro software. It's a bit useful and could be hard for me if I were to learn playing songs from a software in a long run. Anyway, I play the keyboard because I was inspired by my favourite band, Evanescence, and other bands that have a keyboardist. I intend to take this as a hobby first. Nothing serious at the moment because pathetically I can only play 2 songs so far.. Yeah.. But I want to be better at this instrument..

Go for it Lacrymosa! It's kind of hard to find a keyboardist who's into gothic or symphonic rock/metal here. If you keep at it, you're only gonna get better. My band has been trying to find a keyboardist but no such luck as yet, haha...

Yeah, I like Goth~ You spotted that. But I'm not Gothic. Anyway, eventually I'll find myself a keyboard teacher to train me. It's quite hard to learn from software, really..

Hi fellow KeyBoardists of Soft. Is there such a thing as KeyBoardists Meetup Day here eg. once or twice a month - where you all Meet each other in person to share your Passion, make friends as in Face To Face Meetup and have FUN?.

If there is kindly let me know, as I would love to come, if there isn't. Soft (James) can try to help you all Organise it for the start...How is it?

Warmest Regards

Eric

No such thing at the moment. Anyway, for me work life is hectic and time is scarce..

By the way, I dont think there's a need to post the same reply in two different threads.. let's try to keep the forum tidy.

Hey keyboardists of SOFT,

care to share what are you guys currently learning to play? :)

Hello there! :D

I've been playing the piano since I was 5 or 6, and been through all the ABRSM exams till Grade 8. And then gave up piano for a bit because it was just against my wishes. Then, someone introduced Dream Theater to me, and Jordan Rudess inspired me to pick up piano playing again, but in the form of keyboards. Got my first keyboard at the beginning of this year, and have been playing quite a bit since. I'm currently in a prog metal band, and we're doing a cover of Dream Theater's Stream of Consciousness, and also In Flames's The Jester's Dance (it's short and simple, but so addictive!). :)

eventhough I'm guitarist I'm glad to read this tread... If I know that there's a huge need of keyboardist here I should study keyboards than guitar...just to unite the passion of aspirant musicians like me...

now im pressured to find a keyboardist in our upcoming band...if anyone who want to have a band and interested to play new wave, pop & RnB pls PM me...

admin sorry for the OT
