Arsenal-

West Ham United-

By Richard Clarke

The defences of Arsenal’s fortress have been breached just once.

West Ham are still the only visiting side to have tasted victory at Emirates Stadium in 17 months of competitive football. It is a poignant achievement given that the East End outift were the last away team to win at Highbury aswell.

Indeed Alan Curbishley’s men have been terrorising the big four recently. They achieved doubles over Arsenal and Manchester United last season. And, having helped Wenger’s men knock Sir Alex Ferguson’s side off top spot on Saturday, they arrive at Emirates Stadium on New Year’s Day intent on returning the favour.

However Arsenal’s young side showed their title credentials in abundance at Everton on Saturday evening. West Ham’s win had opened the door but the in-form Goodison Park outfit still presented a considerable barrier to returning to the summit of the Premier League.

“I feel we have shown that we have improved compared to last year,” Wenger told Arsenal.com on New Year’s Eve.

“In the last three years we have been 20 points behind the leaders in May and at least 12-15 at Christmas. Today we are two points ahead of everybody else. So we feel stronger.

“Now we want to create a negative history for West Ham at Emirates Stadium. We have already beaten them over there at Upton Park and we want to show that spirit tomorrow. Yes they have won this fixture the last two times but [the reverse] always has to start somewhere otherwise you might as well say it will last for 50 years.

“It is always down to the quality on the day but of course it is sometimes psychological too. However they know we are strong at home now and I feel we want to make that feeling continue against them as well.”

Arsenal have shuffled their squad for the final festive fixture. Emmanuel Eboue, Justin Hoyte and Theo Walcott have been drafted back in. Bacary Sagna is rested while Gilberto is still recovering from sickness. According to Wenger, Robin van Persie is still “optimistically, a maximum of 10 days away from being competitive”.

Arsenal were almost pilloried for scoring route-one goals against Everton on Saturday. Certainly Wenger’s side have always aspired to play the beautiful game but the manager is perfectly content to be pragmatic in pursuit of victory.

“Yes it seems we have a notice book that says we only can play a certain way and if we do play long balls we are criticised,” he said. “But when we don’t do it we are criticised aswell sometimes so we just like to take the positives out of it.

“On Saturday we played an outstanding Everton team that forced us to play long because we couldn’t play short. The weather didn’t help, it was windy and the pitch was not at its best. To be efficient we had to go for a more direct game and we did that very well. Maybe we surprised Everton with that because teams didn’t expect it from us.”

Three London derbies and two trips to sides eyeing Europe represented a difficult Christmas for Wenger. Those two dropped points at Portsmouth sent the media sniffing for cracks in the Arsenal armoury. In the end it was Manchester United who faltered.

“It has been a really tough run so I must say congratulations to our squad,” said the Frenchman. “They have been up for it every time and if you look at the intensity in the games, it has been ferocious. We played cup game after cup game over Christmas but we stood up to it every time.”

The New Year will only present more of the same so a little, ahem, resolution will be needed.

The only downside of being top is that you make yourself an obvious target to aspirant clubs. West Ham proved themselves to be one of those just a matter of days ago.

However Arsenal have dropped only two points at their ‘fortress’ during the first half of this season. And their title credentials during 2008 will, in part, rest on retaining that kind of record.

Arsenal2Eduardo 2, Adebayor 19

West Ham United0

By Richard Clarke

Arsenal laid their West Ham bogey to rest with a comfortable 2-0 win at Emirates Stadium on New Year’s Day.

The Hammers have obtained two notable records over Arsène Wenger’s side in recent years. They were the last side beat Arsenal at Highbury and remain the only team to have tasted victory at the Club’s new home.

This afternoon they were aiming to become the first side to complete three League wins away at Arsenal for 22 years.

That never looked possible after Eduardo volleyed home with only 72 seconds gone — the fastest goal at Emirates so far. West Ham had their chances but Emmanuel Adebayor’s exquisitely taken second in the 18th minute virtually put the game beyond the visitors’ reach.

Arsenal could have increased their advantage after the break but, at the end of a tough Christmas period, they did not seem to want to extend themselves too much.

And, of course, the victory keeps Wenger’s side two points clear at the top of the Premier League.

The manager made four changes from the 4-1 win at Everton. Bacary Sagna, Abou Diaby and Alex Hleb dropped out while Nicklas Bendtner was suspended. Justin Hoyte, Tomas Rosicky, Emmanuel Adebayor and Emmanuel Eboue came in.

That Goodison Park victory had only returned Arsenal to the top of the Premier League because West Ham had produced a remarkable comeback to beat Manchester United earlier in the day.

Their hopes of a repeat performance lasted exactly 72 seconds this afternoon. Rosicky picked up the ball on the left and nudged it forward to Cesc Fabregas. He swivelled into space and floated a cross to the near post where an unmarked Eduardo chested the ball down before firing home on the turn.

The Croatian may have taken time to adapt but, after a brace against Everton on Saturday, this strike took him to an impressive 10 goals in 19 starts since signing from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer.

More often than not, an early strike is crucial to Arsenal when at home. It allows them to settle down and play their best football.

However within 13 minutes of going behind West Ham had three chances of drawing level. Mark Noble and Carlton Cole sent deflected and dangerous drives just beyond Manuel Almunia’s left-hand upright.

Then Noble skimmed a low corner to the near post and Anton Ferdinand fired goalwards. Fortunately for Arsenal, Clichy was on sentry duty at the near post and booted the ball away.

It was fast becoming an end-to-end game. The only difference between the sides at this stage was that Arsenal were looking far more likely to take the chances they created.

In the 15th minute Eduardo dribbled his way through and set up Rosicky. But the Czech midfielder saw his drive deflect into the grateful arms of Green. Then Eboue sent a low cross into the area and Arsenal had faint claims for a penalty when Flamini went down. However referee Chris Foy rightly waved play on.

West Ham were under pressure but still carving out opportunities for themselves. Ljungberg fired a shot into the sidenetting then Cole blazed over from close range.

So when Arsenal’s second goal arrived in the 18th minute it was perhaps against the run of play.

Clichy’s long pass picked out the scampering Adebayor. He nodded the bouncing ball past the onrushing Robert Green and, from the acutest of angles, sidefooted a delicate shot across the goalline, off the far post and into the net. A wonderful finish.

This was turning into a strange affair. West Ham had probably created as many chances as Arsenal but were 2-0 down and nearly out of sight. The home side were showing the same ruthless streak that had been so evident in the second half at Everton.

However there was still room for a little sentiment when Ljungberg hobbled off with an injury seven minutes before the break. The former Arsenal midfielder appreciated his warm reception.

Before that John Pantsil had sent spectacular overhead kick just wide. But by now West Ham’s enthusiasm was starting to flag a little.

Cole was still a threat for the visitors however four minutes before the interval Arsenal broke forward and had Adebayor spotted Eduardo in space on his right then the game would have been over.

There was still time for Arsenal to have shout for a penalty when Jonathan Spector appeared to handle Eboue’s cross. Before the break the Ivorian also saw a shot changed down and sent a header wide.

West Ham had renewed energy after the restart but once again Arsenal were the more clinical side.

Adebayor and Rosicky combined nicely on the left for the latter to prod an effort wide. Just before the hour Eboue’s teasing cross was nodded just beyond of the far post by the diving Eduardo.

George McCartney sent an effort wide for the visitors but by now Arsenal had the game in a firm yet comfortable grip.

Hoyte, Fabregas and Rosicky had long-range efforts charged down while Adebayor tried to lob Green from an extravagant distance.

It was all too easy for Arsenal really. West Ham had run out of ideas and bringing on Dean Ashton and Herni Camara did little to change that.

The game meandered to its conclusion with the home side in utter control.

The victory means Arsenal leave the festive period with 10 points from a possible 12 and their lead of the Premier League intact.

A very healthy way to start the New Year.

Arsène Wenger: 'I still don't understand how it went in'
Arsenal 2-0 West Ham United

on a game of two halves...
"I felt in the first half West Ham were a few times dangerous, especially on set pieces, we didn't look at ease. In the second half we looked like we were in control without really push it to score absolutely more goals. But we just didn't want to concede a goal and I think that's the inference of our defenders who wanted to keep a clean sheet. West Ham maybe as well, who didn't come out in the second half and didn't challenge us really. We were quite comfortable in the second half and overall this Christmas period has been absolutely great for us because we had four difficult games and we come out with one draw and three wins. If you add Chelsea - four wins and one draw."

on scoring from long balls...
"Well the teams that come here play four-five-one and try to mark us very tight and push us up very high, you know. Therefore their defenders need to play nearly on the half way line, and with the players we have we can as well go behind the central defenders and that gives us naturally a different option. They have always two options - other teams - stop us from the start of the play or they drop very deep, and then of course we have not this option, but West Ham decided to push very high up and therefore they gave us some room behind the central defenders. We work on it of course, to work with the runs of Adebayor, because there is so much pace and power that he can use that, and as well he is shrewed to get in behind the central defenders. So it gives us a little bit a different option."

on a couple of well taken goals...
"I still don't understand how it went in. I feel the first goal was a great finish as well because it looked so natural. When you are... I got a few balls in this central position and I know it's not as easy as it looked today [laughter]. It looked just chest and then in the back of the net in a fraction of a second, you know? He's a clinical finisher, Eduardo."

on Clichy's long pass for Adebayor...
"It was a fantastic pass, he did that already at Everton. It's two assists in the last two games, Clichy. "

on a tense title race...
"It's too early to go into mind games, you know. I feel at the moment we have the luxury, going into January, that we rely on our performances. Man United will be a tough opponent but we have one thing - we have belief, we have talent, we are ready to fight. This team is hungry. So that's good ingredients for the rest, I don't count only Man United, I still feel Chelsea today... they were one-nil down - they won two-one, so we have still to count Chelsea. You have still to count Liverpool so let's see where we go from there."

on preferring to lead from the front...
"Yes, definitely. Because you just rely on your results, the other way you say 'no we do not look at the others' - but you still look at the others, you know? Because you are second, or third, or fourth. And you have to hope that the others don't perform."

on West Ham looking tired after beating United...
"Of course, it gave us a little plus, especially in the second half, they had nothing to push on. It happens to us as well you know, and sometimes the other teams play teams who have played against us, and they take advantage of it as well."

on his New Year's Resolution...
"To give absolutely everything I have, every bit of energy to make this Club successful, and make this team successful, because I feel it's a pleasure to work with the team and they give absolutely everything as well, so I want to give everything to make this team successful."

Gallas - We'll miss Toure but we can cope
Arsenal 2-0 West Ham United

By Richard Clarke

William Gallas admits he does not know how much Arsenal will miss Kolo Toure while he is away at the African Nations Cup.

The Ivorian played his last Premier League game before going to Ghana in the 2-0 victory over West Ham on New Year’s Day. If Toure’s team go all the way he will not be available for Arsenal again until mid-February.

Gallas concedes that Toure’s loss is a blow to the leaders.

“Kolo is very important for the squad because he is very strong,” said the captain. “He has good qualities and my relationship with him has been good.

“We have good players in the squad and someone else will be able to play. If you play for Arsenal you are very good and I hope my relationship with them will be good too. We will miss Kolo but I can only say how much after a few weeks.”

The win over West Ham helped Arsenal emerge from a difficult Christmas campaign with a two-point lead in the Premier League.

“We played very well and it was just about what we had to do,” said Gallas. “We have got two days off so we can relax now.

“It is good that we are top. It was important for us to show everybody that we wanted to be there. For me it is not finished and we have to stay strong to stay on top.

“I think Manchester United and Chelsea want to come back on us. It will not be easy for them and it will not be easy for us. We have to show people how we are strong and how we want to win the Premier League.

“Everyday I speak with the players and the boss and we know how we want to play. We know sometimes it will not be easy to win. For example we needed to do what we did against Everton.

“We didn’t play well but we were so strong. We wanted to win that game and we showed everybody. If we can keep doing that I think everything will be fine.”
