Almunia - It seemed like a training match

By Richard Clarke

Manuel Almunia has labelled Tuesday night's victory at Fenerbahce as a “strange” and “crazy” game.
The 31-year-old was handed a tough task for his first match as Arsenal captain – a European tie in Turkey.
However, Almunia saved from Ugur Boral at point-blank range in the opening moments and the visitors capitalised on that by scoring twice in 70 seconds around the 10-minute mark.
Mikael Silvestre then inadvertently put the ball high past Almunia however Arsenal responded immediately through Abou Diaby.
The visitors could have added to their lead before the break but Daniel Guiza, a former team-mate of Almunia at Recreativo Huelva, spurned two fine chances to pull Fenerbahce back into the game.
Alex Song seemed to have put the game beyond doubt early in the second half but Guiza did beat Almunia before substitute Aaron Ramsey wrapped things up in injury time.
The match finished 5-2 but it could have easily have been 10-4.
“It was a crazy game,” admitted Almunia afterwards. “There were so many chances it seemed like a training match.
“The game started well for me with that save. It made things easier. After that I found the game more comfortable.

“Personally I had a strange feeling about the match, everything seemed much easier than normal in the Champions League.
“But it must have been a great game for the supporters of both clubs.”

Eduardo

Eduardo is 'three weeks away' from return

By Richard Clarke
Eduardo will be back playing competitive football in three weeks.
The Arsenal striker suffered horrific leg and ankle injuries at Birmingham back on February 23 and, in the immediate aftermath, it was feared his career could be in doubt.
However the Croatian was operated on that evening in the Midlands and has been working hard on his rehabilitation ever since.
Speaking at Arsenal’s AGM on Thursday morning, Arsène Wenger confirmed that the long wait is nearly over.
Eduardo is three weeks away from playing competitive football,” he said.
However, it appears Tomas Rosicky’s return will take a little longer.
“He should be back after Christmas,” said Wenger.
The Czech midfielder has been out since January 29 with a hamstring problem.

Arsène Wenger’s career has disproved the notion that nice guys finish last in football.

The Frenchman is known a gentleman of the global game, fashioning stylish sides that win more than their fair share of silverware.

Gianfranco Zola was one of the most popular players of the Premiership era. Not only skilful on the pitch for Chelsea but gracious and generous off it.

But Wenger believes, having recently taken the managerial reins at West Ham, the Italian will soon develop a ruthless streak.

The pair go head-to-head for the first time at Upton Park on Sunday.

Zola was appointed in mid-September after the somewhat surprising dismissal of Alan Curbishley. As ever, Wenger is asking for a new arrival in the managerial fraternity to be given the opportunity to have a genuine influence on his side.

“He has to be given time because he has just come in,” said the Frenchman at Friday’s press conference. “There is massive pressure in the Premier League now but you have to feel first that you have been given time.

“I am sure he will do well. I liked him as a player, as a man, and I am sure he will be a good manager.

“I don’t think [he’s too nice to be in charge]. Will he develop a nastier streak? I think time will give him that don’t worry.

“When you want to be successful you have to do what it takes,” Wenger went on. “You always think about ‘how can I be successful, what is the shortest way to get there?’ Then you do it.

“And, to be fair, I don’t really know what it means ‘to be nice’. You always just want to be fair and be honest with yourself.”

On Thursday, Wenger told Arsenal TV Online that William Gallas (hamstring) and Kolo Toure (shoulder) had recovered from injury and would be in the squad for Sunday. On Friday, he also suggested that Bacary Sagna (knee) might have a small chance of being involved too.

The return of the duo (or trio) is timely as Arsenal need a little defensive stability right now. Having kept five clean sheets in their opening six games, Wenger’s side have obtained just two in their last eight appearances. Tuesday’s tie in Turkey is a case in point. Arsenal tore through Fenerbahce, scoring five goals but they could have easily conceded as many themselves.

“I do not deny we did not look very sound defensively in our last game,” said Wenger.

“Ideally you want to be fantastic going forwards and fantastic defending. But sometimes you have a price to pay. When you incite your team to go forwards, like we did against Fenerbahce, then you will also be a bit vulnerable defensively as well. If you encourage your team to never get out of their position, it is easier to be sound defensively.”

Zola won his first two Premier League games at West Ham but has lost his last two. The honeymoon period has been short.

Arsenal’s results have been much better since a four-letter word entered the vocabulary of their season – Hull. However the defeat to the Tigers at Emirates Stadium still enters every conversation about the early-season aspirations of Wenger’s side.

Three wins and a draw has set the ball rolling again for Arsenal since then, leaving them just four points off leaders Chelsea. A win at Upton Park would be another big injection of confidence.

“It is always a good atmosphere when you play against West Ham,” said Wenger. “The supporters always get behind their team when you go there. It is always committed and interesting.

“But we have created a momentum after the Hull game,” the manager concluded.

“We beat Porto and Fenerbahce in a convincing way, had a draw with Sunderland then beat Everton.

“We just want to keep that going now.”

  • Adebayor 90

Arsenal

By Richard Clarke
Real title contenders pull off victories like this.

Having won so comprehensively in Fenerbahce on Tuesday you could have forgiven Arsenal for being leg weary at West Ham on Sunday. After all, the weekend results suggest the travails of the Champions League did have an affect on Manchester United and Chelsea.

However, Arsène Wenger shuffled his squad at Upton Park and the XI he sent out produced a disciplined and committed performance against Gianfranco Zola’s equally determined side.

The vital goal came via the errant boot of West Ham defender Julien Faubert 15 minutes from time when the Frenchman turned in a shot from Emmanuel Adebayor at the far post. It came just as Arsenal were starting to get on top. They had made an arduous ascent.
West Ham had matched the visitors all the way for the first hour but Wenger’s men just managed to draw away in the final stretch.

Adebayor added another in injury time and that was perhaps hard on West Ham. Carlton Cole’s last-gasp red card also did not befit the effort they had put in.

However the very tightness of the game and effort required to win it will satisfy Wenger greatly.
Arsenal moved back into fourth with the victory but the spirit on Sunday suggested they may be higher at the end of the season.

With games coming thick and fast, it was not surprising to see Wenger makes changes. However the extent and the nature of them was interesting.

Those left on the bench told the story. Though passed fit, perhaps Bacary Sagna (knee) and Kolo Toure (shoulders) were still working their way back from injury. Despite his goal in Turkey on Tuesday, Abou Diaby was also lacking full match-fitness after a long lay-off. Adebayor, you presume, was simply rested and Nicklas Bendtner came in to the side.

Mikael Silvestre retained his place in the starting XI and William Gallas returned from a hamstring injury to join him at centre half. Alex Song moved into midfield alongside Cesc Fabregas with Samir Nasri and Theo Walcott on the flanks. Emmanuel Eboue continued at right back, Robin van Persie returned up front while Denilson was omitted completely.

Traditionally, West Ham v Arsenal has been spicy however the opening stages were pretty bland and it took 10 minutes for either side to fashion a chance. Van Persie’s loose pass was intercepted by Lee Bowyer, whose touch set up David Di Michele to let fly from 25 yards. Almunia acrobatically tipped the ball over the bar.

After that, Arsenal started to flex their muscles.

In the 25th minute, Fabregas chipped the ball into the area and Van Persie cleverly chested it into the path of Walcott. Despite the heavy presence of Herta Illunga, he got off a decent shot from close-range but Robert Green made an excellent low stop with his right hand.

Buoyed with confidence, the visitors were now pressing forward. However that tactic nearly saw them caught on the counter-attack a couple of minutes later.

In response, the visiting fans chanted the name of their keeper for perhaps the first time. It said much about both his blossoming reputation and the importance of that save.

Suddenly we had a real game on our hands. Just past the half-hour Bendtner failed to connect with a header from Nasri’s cross. However the Dane redeemed himself in the 37th minute when he cut in from the left and forced another flying save from Green. An entirely self-made opportunity.

The half-time whistle was welcome respite. After a slow opening, this had developed into a rousing, end-to-end affair. At the midway point, both sides had cause for optimism.

The equilibrium continued after the start. The Arsenal defence missed Bellamy’s corner and the ball bounced off the chest of the startled Matthew Upson for Almunia to collect easily. At the other end, Walcott slid a dangerous ball across the face of goal and James Collins hacked it over from under his own bar.The pace was unrelenting with neither midfield having much control on matters. But West Ham were getting most joy down their left flank.
They had claims for a handball in the area against William Gallas. On the hour, Bellamy barged past Eboue, stormed in to the area and cut the ball back. Gallas half-stopped it and then had to show bravery to block as Bowyer attempted to convert the loose ball.

Walcott remained Arsenal’s best outlet, you could almost feel the nerves coming off the West Ham defence whenever he got the ball.

In the 65th minute, the 19-year-old found room on the right of the area and fired low across the area. Collins' clearance fell to Van Persie, who returned the ball with interest. However his goal-bound shot was blocked.

Seconds later, Wenger made changes. Adebayor and Diaby came on, Nasri and Walcott went off. The Arsenal manager was forsaking width for directness. However the change seemed to bring the best out of Van Persie.

First he cut inside two defenders and fired in a curling cross-shot that forced the best out of Green. Then he hit the woodwork with a cracking free-kick from just outside the area.

For the first time in the game, one side was sustaining pressure on the other. You sensed an Arsenal goal was coming.

It arrived in the 75th minute. Adebayor collected the ball just inside the area then used all his strength and tenacity to fire a shot across the face of goal. It was not going in until Faubert touched the ball in at the far post.

Now Arsenal went for the jugular. Bendtner crossed and Adebayor arrived to thump a low shot towards the near post. Green saved again and the Togolese striker sent his follow-up over the bar.
Adebayor did grab another on the break in injury time to seal the game.

In the final seconds, Cole was sent off for going through the back of Song.

A sad end to a stirring game

Wenger used to smoke

Arsène Wenger... 'I never smoked when I played'

http://www.arsenal.com/match-menu/3023063/first-team/west-ham-united-v-arsenal Wenger - I smoked when I was a young coach

Arsène Wenger has both a “moral and physical’ objection to footballers smoking but also admits that he used to have the odd cigarette himself years ago to relieve the pressures of being a young coach.

The issue is in the news after pictures of William Gallas appeared in an English newspaper on Friday morning. It was showed the Arsenal captain with an unlit cigarette in his hand.

At his Friday press conference, Wenger said he would be asking the 31-year-old about the story. But, he recalled, it was part of football culture in France years ago.

“Smoking has both a physical and moral impact [on a player],” he said. “But there is smoking and then there is smoking. You did get players who’d smoke 40 cigarettes a day but now it is much less.

“When I was a player, nobody would ever tell you that you should not smoke. We were driving home in coaches where you had to open the windows in winter to see each other.

“I never smoked a lot and never when I played. But when I became a young coach I had an assistant who smoked and, at 3am in the morning when you have lost a big game, I might have one.”

The Arsenal substitutes are vital

Wenger - The substitutes can be the stars

By Richard Clarke
In busy periods like this, the bench can play a vital role according to Arsène Wenger.
Arsenal fans had a perfect example on Sunday at Upton Park. When Emmanuel Adebayor came on with 23 minutes to go the game was in the balance. By the end he had registered an assist and a goal as the visitors went home with a hard-fought three points.
Wenger had rotated his squad for that game and has promised to do the same when Tottenham visit Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. However, the Frenchman knows the eventual matchwinner may not be in the starting line-up.
“We will rotate a bit because we play many, many games at the moment,” said the Arsenal manager. “It is a period where rotation and the quality of your bench are important.
“We saw that against West Ham when Diaby and Adebayor came on.”
That win was heartening because, as Theo Walcott told Arsenal TV Online afterwards, the side had showed they could do the dirty jobs as well as play flowing football. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Wenger said that sort of psyche is crucial right now.
“We are in a period now where the squad mentality is vital,” he remarked.
“But I am very confident because we have a very strong united spirit in the dressing room and we want to do well.
“We have shown that in recent games. We won at Fenerbahce, we won at West Ham, we also beat Everton in a convincing way.
“Now we want to keep that going against Tottenham.”

4-4 .... Almunia was dreaming all night long! Time for Gallas to relax one corner & lets have Silvestre partner Toure instead ....

and though this hurts me to say: well done spurs who never gave up until they got their lucky injury time equaliser

Argh...yet again...the defence slept....bloody hell!
Harry(Potter)Redknapp has worked his magic on spurs...spurs put up a good fight and we just let them do it....Argh!

bring on stoke city for an AFC backlash!

DROP GALLAS - RE-INSTATE TOURE AS CAPTAIN ALONGSIDE SILVESTRE

By Richard Clarke
Arsène Wenger will go back to basics for the trip to Stoke on Saturday.

After shipping two late goals to allow Tottenham a 4-4 draw on Wednesday, Arsenal have been under fire from many quarters this week. And that is unlikely to change at the Britannia Stadium at the weekend.

Tony Pulis has assembled a rough, tough side who have been good enough to take nine points out of 15 at home this season. They also have a major weapon in Rory Delap’s missile-like throws.

But then Arsenal have been supplying their critics with ammunition this week. Allowing Jermaine Jenas and Aaron Lennon to score in the closing minutes on Wednesday has allowed the media to rake over the coals of Arsenal’s title bid when in fact they are still very much in the hunt. You only have to think back 12 months when Wenger’s side themselves were flying high at the top.

The decisive point in the season is nearly always around March and April not now. But while a title cannot be won in November, it can be lost during that period. That is why Wenger will concentrate on the strengths of his side for the trip to the Potteries.

“I want to win the next game,” he told Arsenal.com. “It is as simple as that.

“You cannot plan to win in three games and not look at the next one. The best chance we have is to just win the next one because that’s where you get confidence.

“Of course we are all upset but we focus on what we do well because that will allow us to continue to be strong in the League. At the same time we need to correct what we don’t do so well.”

Arsenal will be without William Gallas (hamstring) for the trip and possibly Emmanuel Eboue. The Ivorian was set for tests on his knee on Friday.

It seems safe to assume Kolo Toure will replace the captain and Arsenal will need his experience. Central defence is a key area against Stoke because of Delap’s throw-ins.

The Irishman has the ability to arrow in a fast, flat ball into the heart of the area from either side of the pitch. Stoke have used the ploy at every opportunity this term. It has brought Delap three assists including one for Ricardo Gardner’s winner against Sunderland on Wednesday night.

Wenger is not too concerned by the tactic and, somewhat surprisingly given his aesthetic footballing principles, the Frenchman would even employ it himself if one of his side had that ability.

“Why not?” he asked. “If you have a player who can do that, it is normal.

“[But we will counter it by] attacking the ball in the air and by not making too much of a fuss of it. They score one goal every one or two months and it is not like a penalty, it is a throw-in.

“I think you shouldn’t be obsessed by that, just try to dominate the game and score goals yourself.

“We know that they are very dangerous on set-pieces and those long throws especially. What is most important is that we have the ball and we put them under pressure.

“Stoke are doing OK so far,” Wenger concluded. “The teams that have come up prepare well now and most of them are doing very well.

“But this is a real test and we want to pass it.”

Half-time...........and Arsenal are 1-0 down, even though they've had 72% possesion! A goal from Ricardo Fuller on 11mins got them started.

The game is not finish yet.....but as an Gunner fan, in fact i believe tis will be another trophy-less season for the Gunners....y?

1) Very very very very very very very very very very weak on crosses, set pieces, long ball into the box...I dunno y Arsene train and kind of perfected their over doing pin point passing.....Arsene, if happen to read this, best defence doesnt necessarily come from gd passes and gd offence

2) They need a very solid centre back, we all do respect of Toure, but it seems every season he is getting slackier and slackier...is it me or is he getting fatter? and they also don need cry baby in the team, you noe who i mean

3) Arsene constant comment on he believing his squad......but does the squad have the heart to believe in themself....he did not do anything much in the transfer market...he claim by adding player to the team will demoralised the young....y care so much of the youngster when they dont have the desire to win???? in the end , when he harness this youngster to become a star, they will leave the gunners for sure.... so do u think tis youngster care of u???

4) Is it me or do they have the rotation system tat liverpool implement last season???

5) They are gd in passes, i tink if they can pass the whole london area, they might do it.....y cant anybody in that god damn squad even thinking abt the ball going in to the goal? or do they have passing clauses bonus in their contract, where by each game if they pass more den 100 time they get a bonus....sheesh

If you wanna add some more to this, be my guest, and hmmm FGL.... we tat kind of "team spirit", u think Gunner will win the Carling cup??? and yuh, "Arsene we believe in you, but not your squad"
