Wenger - I'm not afraid to pay big money

By Richard Clarke

Arsène Wenger is not scared to buy big this summer if he feels he needs to.
Speaking before the weekend defeat at Old Trafford that saw Arsenal's title bid come to an end, the manager said he may only take on one experienced player in the close season. However, despite some of his previous signings failing to fulfil their potential, he would not be afraid to outlay major money.
For example he was asked if the purchases of Jose Antonio Reyes and Francis Jeffers had put him off spending high transfer fees, also whether he was 'scared' of bringing in a superstar like Ronaldinho.
"Scared of what?" he replied. "I would not be scared. We couldn't afford him now so we have to forget it.
"But the money [we have paid out] is not comparable to what other teams have spent on players. For example with Reyes we got a big part back and for Jeffers a little part back. If we have the money and I am convinced it is worth it, we will do it."

Ex-Liverpool striker slams shambles at Anfield

Liverpool great Ian St John has labelled the current boardroom stand-off at Anfield "a shambles".

Reds chief executive Rick Parry said Monday he intended to hold talks with manager Rafael Benitez after the latest twist in a series of off-field dramas.

That came after Benitez voiced his disappointment at co-chairman Tom Hicks's revelation Parry had been present at the club owners' infamous meeting with Jurgen Klinsmann last year.

It had been thought only Hicks, his fellow American co-owner George Gillett - with whom he has now fallen out - and their sons had been present as they sounded out former Germany striker Klinsmann as an "insurance policy" should Benitez leave.

"It is a real shambles," former Liverpool and Scotland striker St John told BBC Radio Five on Tuesday. "When you think about it, has it ever worked having two people running an organisation like a football club?

"One guy at the helm, fine - he carries the can. You can't have two people doing it because if they have a disagreement what is going to happen?

"And you have Rick Parry who is supposed to be the liaison between them and Rafa and then Rafa finds out, 'Hang on, he's hiding things from me'.

"I was amazed to tell the truth. I thought, like everyone else, the Americans had done it over there with Klinsmann and that was it.

"But when we heard that Rick Parry was over there. Rafa must feel right out on a limb here. Where is he going to get any support from?"

Last week Hicks called for Parry to resign. But both Hicks and Gillett each own 50 perecnt of the club and with Gillett in no mood to grant Hicks's request, Parry is set to stay in his job.

It has been reported that while Parry went to New York for an initial meeting with Klinsmann only at the request of Liverpool's co-owners and did not attend a subsequent meeting in California.

Despite all the wrangling, Liverpool have still reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Gillett and Hicks's dispute has led to the stalling of a takoever bid from Dubai Investment Capital, a group bankrolled by the ruling royal family of the United Arab Emirates.

My View- No comment, hope this takeover dispute will end and not to prolong it coz to a certain extend, it will affect the player and the manager....

Former Brazil striker Romario announced his retirement on Monday at 42

RIO DE JANEIRO: Former Brazil striker Romario announced his retirement on Monday at 42, ending a career in which he won the World Cup, was involved in numerous controversies and claimed to have scored more than 1,000 goals.

"Officially I'm not playing any more. I've stopped," Romario said at a DVD launch. "My time is up. Everything has been a lot of fun."

Romario played for Brazil at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups, scoring five goals to help Brazil win the latter tournament. He made 73 appearances for his country between 1987 and 2005, scoring 56 goals.

He had four stints with Vasco da Gama, where he started and finished his career, and also played for Flamengo and Fluminense in Brazil, Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven and Valencia.

Romario also had spells with Al Sadd in Qatar, Miami FC in the United States and Adelaide United in Australia.

These last 20 years for me have been very positive," said Romario, regarded as one of the game's top goal poachers. "To be honest, I'm stopping because I don't see myself in any shape to continue playing.

"I haven't played since November, I've put on three or four kilos since then and, at this age, it's difficult to get back to fitness."

Known for his dislike of training, he added: "I'm happy because I won't have to train again, or travel or sit in team hotels."

Last May, Romario scored what he claimed was his 1,000th goal but admitted that many of these were scored in friendlies, youth and testimonial games.

He only scored two more goals, making his last appearance on November 4 as a substitute for Vasco against Internacional.

My View - Another great player retired.....

^ haha..

there are disputes about his 1000-goals.. quite a number of ppl said the actuall only scored less than 900 goals.. but still a great achievement.

Well, Liverpool is the most successful team in England, just needs some more time.

I hope Benitez stays and the whole lovelovelovelovelovelovelove boardroom shit gets solved before everything derails.

Alittle late, but after countless replays, I don't think Babel dived.

My kitty is damn dangerous.

but the Pool match against Blackburn recently the Pool players were diving almost at every chance they have.corrupting the beautiful game.
