Wenger: 'Crazy' title ambition is still there

  • By Richard Clarke
Arsène Wenger admits he is “crazy” to harbour any lingering hopes of overhauling Manchester United at the top of the Premier League.
On Saturday afternoon, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side lost for the second successive weekend. The result allowed Arsenal to close the gap to 10 points with a thumping 3-1 win at Newcastle the same evening. With only eight games left, it would take a total collapse by Manchester United, let alone Liverpool and Chelsea, for Arsenal to finish on top. But, speaking afterwards, Wenger could not quite bring himself to rule it out entirely.
“I still have hope because I am a little bit crazy,” he said. “Realistically, no [it is not on]. But it does not matter how much chance that we have, we have to get as close as possible.”
Despite their troubles, Manchester United are still the side to beat and Wenger argues that their recent defeats are just the blip that all the “Big Four’ have suffered at some point this term.
“It happens to teams,” he said. “Manchester United are still in a strong position.
“No team has looked like they were not vulnerable at all this year. Nobody has been really dominating this League this year. We have all had our weak periods. Manchester United won 10 games 1-0 and they have the quality to finish it off. But you can see how important psychology is to a team.
“They had a big disappointment last week. That is difficult for everybody.
“When you have a big knock it sometime takes you a long time to recover but they will recover.
“I am sure of that because their manager has experience, their players have experience and they have one game in hand.”

GUNNERS FOR THE EPL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha finally 'The Prof' has admitted he is becoming 'The Nutty Prof'. Do the Gunners want to meet Liverpool, who have thrashed 3 good teams in 3 games, next? I think not. Hello, what does Diaby have over Gerrard? Nothing whatsoever. Gallas can go fly kite against Torres, although i admit that Van Persie will test Carragher and Skrtel. Clichy will be threatening too. I think that it'll be a close one, like the one at the Emirates.

Pfft! We drew the last meeting with Liverpool with just 10 men, noting that Adebayor AND Fabregas out in the second half!

What makes you think we're going to back down? With a full squad the last game we had would probably be another 2-1 (courtsey of v.Persie) like how Arsenal defeat Man Utd and Chelsea.

The problem with many pool fans is that after a few wins, the acting like the epl & cl is theirs for the season ......

of course not having won it for the last 19 years - cant blame you all lah ... wishful thinking ...

ARSENAL WILL STOP the poolboys on 21 Apr.....

Football: Tottenham to star in Singapore

SINGAPORE: English Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur will be in Singapore in just under 10 weeks.
It is believed the 2008 League Cup champions will be here for a match against a Singapore Selection at the end of May as part of a two—match tour, with a game in Hanoi followed by a visit to the Lion City.
Sports marketing outfit The Red Card are the organisers of the tour and its director R. Sasikumar, the former Singapore defender, assured Tottenham fans that the stars will turn up.
He said: "At least 90 per cent of the team has to play, including the usual suspects. That’s a contractual obligation.
"Of course, with injuries and all that, no one can predict such things, but otherwise, they’ll come out with their full team.
"We’re looking for at least 30,000 to 35,000 fans turning up, so at the moment, I think there’s only one stadium that is available, and the National Stadium is it."
The London giants could be one of two Premiership sides to visit, as the Football Association of Singapore are currently in talks with Liverpool for a match here after the English season ends.
Tottenham last played here in 1995, losing on penalties to a Singapore XI after the game ended 1—1. — 93.8Live

England facing striker crisis as Bent is ruled out

England are facing a growing striker crisis after Darren Bent limped out of training on Tuesday, ruling him out of the World Cup qualifier with Ukraine.

The Spurs man is consoled as he leaves training.

Bent was seen to be talking to manager Fabio Capello during training at London Colney, during which he was constantly looking down at his leg. Shortly afterwards he limped back to be seen by the England physios.

The Tottenham forward was only drafted into the squad on Saturday evening after Carlton Cole pulled out, with Emile Heskey also suffering an injury in the friendly win over Slovakia and will not feature.

With the list of strikers on the sidelines already including, Jermain Defoe, Dean Ashton, and Theo Walcott, Capello has been left short and has had to take a chance on Gabriel Agbonlahor who was initially left out after pulling out of the U21 squad with injury.

Capello said of Bent: ''He is injured, he has some problem. He tried to stay here but after the warm-up there was a problem, so I decided to change players. We decided to choose Agbonlahor for the next game.

''I spoke with the manager of Aston Villa and he has been training the last two or three days very well. He is okay now.''

Capello has not had to reverse his decision to leave Michael Owen out of his squad, while he was also not keen to take a chance on Bolton's Kevin Davies who has also been linked with a call-up, despite never having played for his country.

Capello said: ''In every interview I said the door, for all the players, is open. I chose Agbonlahor because he has played a lot of games. I respect Owen but I am focused on the game of football.''

However, the England camp have been boosted with the news that Rio Ferdinand and Peter Crouch will be fit to play against Ukraine.

Capello has confirmed Crouch will start alongside Wayne Rooney up front and he has no doubts about Crouch's credentials as the best targetman he still has available - in a team the Italian believes is continuing to grow in confidence.

''I am sure he [Crouch] is the best forward I can put into the first XI,'' Capello said. ''All the players have a lot of confidence and play without fear. Now they are playing with the same confidence they have for their clubs.''

Ferdinand had been suffering from a back problem and was replaced by Matthew Upson for the friendly against Slovakia, while Crouch suffered a dead leg during the game.

Shaun Wright-Phillips, who also missed Saturday's game, has also returned to training and will provide Capello with further options on the flanks.

World Cup qual - Van Persie pulls out

Eurosport - Tue, 31 Mar 17:46:00 2009

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has pulled out of the Netherlands squad ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Macedonia.

The 25-year-old picked up a groin injury during Saturday's 3-0 win over Scotland and will play no part in the Group 9 game in Amsterdam.

Van Persie netted his side's second against the Scots on Wednesday but the knock forced him off after 65 minutes.

He will return to his club for treatment and faces a race to be fit for Arsenal's next outing - a Premier League clash with Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Netherlands boss Bert van Marwijk has opted against calling up a replacement for Van Persie, opening up the possibility of a starting berth against Macedonia for Liverpool's Ryan Babel.

The Dutch currently top Group 9, eight points ahead of Iceland and Scotland following the weekend's victory.
