i wan to study sound engineering at La Salle SIA and my father thinks dat i will end up like one of those musicians at the pubs addicted to all kinds of vices.......

just pursue ur dreams dude,if sound engineering is what you desired, then go for it,nothing cant stop you from doing what you like, even the entire population of earth
leave alone musician la,u see diff people from other profesion go for prostitution and drink like there's no tomorrow, but hardly one of them is musician
maybe ur parents see the tv or hear rumours from their friend, u know parents, they tend to be overprotective, but u must ensure them la that u wont do all that pros, smoking, drinking thing, then problem solved la,since u're determined to become clean musician

Hey Doubleblade, your dad is one of the majority. He is not wrong, he is only misinformed. How old is he? It's not just as simple as do as you wish kind of thing. However, I do believe that if he were to be given the right info, he will support you all the way.

Some of the things your dad needs to know is what are the career opportunities available and how succesful can you be in the future...all dads think like that. So you got to do a little bit of homework to find out, for example... the company that produced smahing hits like matrix employs sound engineers, and music techies from Singapore. Jack Neo productions, Raintree, and many others who will be coming this way will be emplying from Singapore, or engaging free lance techies here. Why do you think the polys and La Salle wants to start courses like this. Get the facts and talk to your dad, but give the the respect and he will respect you.

This is one thing i cannot understand, Music does not lead you to vices.. Its an avenue of liberation, a place where you can speak your mind freely, The sterotype of musicians playin in pubs which leades to smoky lives, lung cancer liver failure, and STD's is a sad case of social stereotyping..

What is the term clean musicians? why does it even exist? Are pub musicians really faceing that much discrimination in the eyes of those who do not patronise live music?

The problem is, one glitch in the system causes a chain reaction.. which everybody succumbs to.. take this scenario for instance..

Son: Dad, i wanna become a musician..

Dad's Subconcious mind after watching a documentory on bob marley: Oh no! my son wants to be a musician, thats it! hes gonna do drugs, die of lung and liver cancer, hes probably gonna do more women then ive done..

You do the math..

lol...well said.
Talk it out with your parents, whomever may think that being a musician will lead you to a lifetime of vice. I am not saying that it is totally wrong, but to those musicians who strayed to a path of vice, they could've just said NO. It is their own choice, and if you have got what it takes to be a musician, i reckon you will have a level head/mind to steer away from these vices.

I faced a lot of resentment over my choice in playing in a band semi-seriously. strangely, it came from ppl other than my parents. They've been there, they've played music too..i do not see my Dad smokin a joint at one corner whilst doodling with his bass.

musicians will always be seen as good/bad influences.(general stereotyping) It depends on which path they take.

All this said, it is however (still) true that some parents are more stubborn than others... Takes time to convince them, some require personal experience rather than words to believe that musicians and vice can be disassociated. I guess its up to us to show them that it can be done eh!?

Who wants to quit smoking with me? :p

you guy's listen to larc en ciel? it's a j rock band lah.. the guitarist was studying architecture in university when he decided to play in a band instead.. ahaha. parents got super pissed later on...heard his parents hasn't talked to him since then...

My dad: hey son, is that jimi hendrix on your desktop?
Me: Yeah
My dad: Didnt he die of a drug overdose? why are you wasting your time with him?
Me: mehhhhhhhhh

True story.

Then the dad is the biggest idiot.

Jimi Hendrix died a LEGEND, whose music still influence many new people since (now still).

Many years on after his passing, he is still voted the best guitarist ever, on a yearly basis.

The dad is the real MORON. He should encourage his kid the right way, and warn his kid against the social ills. Not put down outright. Why not ask his kid to idolize Barney or teletubies since he is at it.
