okay, I'm still trying to get the hang of reading tabs, but i noticed a lot of tabs have tabs like this:

--11--
--x---
--9--

so how on earth do i paly it? do i play it by:

1) plucking the 11 and the 9 only and leaving the middle string untouched?
2) play all 3 strings, palm muting the middle string and letting it go free?
3) play all 3 strings, palm muting the middle string and holding a finger on the 11/9 fret?

use your first and third to press on the 9*11.

your first finger should lightly touch the * string to mute it. if done nicely only the two strings will play or else the whole song will sound like ** dude.. hope it helped :)

^ i think you meant index and ring finger? when i play power chords like that i use the middle digit or so of my index finger to lightly press the middle string to prevent it from sounding out.

I'll use this example to make it clearer,
E----------
B----------
G--11------
D--x-------
A--9-------
E----------

Use your index finger and place it on the 9th fret of the A string.

The 'x' represents a muted string. Use your index finger to mute the D string.

Use your ring/pinky finger and place it on the 11th fret of the G string.

Strum or pick the A, D and G strings. Make sure your not fretting the D string. Only the octaves should ring out.
