It's not about quality of manufacture. It is about how hard the material is. In a hardcase, the material is solid, like a plank of wood, fibreglass, etc. In a softcase, it is just like a regular backpack though good ones have thick padding. But if you kick a guitar in a softcase hard enough, you can damage the guitar inside. If you kick a guitar in a hardcase, you won't damage the guitar unless you're Chuck Norris.

Hardcases are called hardcases for a reason..

Thing is.. Ballistic nylon can still bend (it's a fabric) so if you kick it the material will not tear or anything, but the guitar inside might take the damage.. Ballistic nylon would be perfect for a mountain climber's backpack though. Particularly the straps since straps are almost always the first to break.

Hmmm that'll be up to the individual softcase I guess. I generally feel more comfortable with a hard layer protecting my guitar, but some softcases are quite impressive in that they do offer better protection than other softcases. Depends on the situation. If I have a very expensive guitar, I'd rather have it in a hardcase.

true... but hard case quiet troublesome... u see when u take mrt... and esp u have a pedal board... both r heavy.. and no hands to tap the card... soft case can carry like harvest set... but is also depends on individual... =p~

Hmmm yeah depends on the individual I guess. I only use a few drive pedals so I can easily keep them in a backpack and carry a hardcase in one hand. Not an issue for me. But if I were carrying a pedalboard, the guitar would have to go onto my back. I'm actually okay with softcases as well (for now, all my guitars are in softcases) as long as I make sure I handle them carefully.

There's also the semi-hardcase. It's like a hardcase but it has a soft layer covering it and straps for you to carry on your back like a backpack. That's a pretty good compromise, as it offers more protection than a softcase, but the functionality of a softcase, though perhaps a little heavier weight-wise.

But usage of ballistic nylon definitely improves a softcase's level of protection, so it's a very good idea though perhaps a little more expensive. But it's worth it. :)

hahs.. yea.. agree with u... but u see.. u can customise it too... how many pokets u wan... mix n match colour... is cool yea? lols

ultimately, it is down to personal preference

a hard case would offer more protection where as a soft case would be more lighter and easier for transporting around.

i really wouldn't get a hard case unless my guitar is really worth a lot.

You failed physics? Just guessing.

A hardcase WITHOUT a soft inner lining will be more damaging than any padded soft case. Ever heard of guitars breaking IN a hardcase on impact?

I've checked in my gigbag with my guitar into a 7 hour flight before. Nothing. No damage. Not even a scratch. This gigbag is a semi-hard case, but soft overall. Just rigid enough to support the main shape.

Get a car dude!

Juz Kiddin! :p

Yeah, I prefer also semi hardcases (i.e. Gator) only if I have wheels...

Whitestrat: I just-passed physics. Actually hardcases I was talking about are those with a soft layer inside. Pretty much all hardcases I've seen have plush interiors, otherwise the guitar would knock around and get damaged by itself.

I love my mono case. I am confident it protects my bass for the knocks, bumps and drops suffered from commuting around Singapore. Of course i do not necessarily intend to hike through Bukit Timah or perform backfilps on my bike, with my bass on my back. Thus i believe its truly your personal preference and your personal habits. Which will dictate the degree of protection you require.

If someone used a large plastic bag to carry their axe around but was EXTREMELY careful then if would be fine..... and damn cheap. =P

Anyway my take is, i go for comfort and maximum protection that a "soft case" can provide. You could take a look at mono cases and get your friend to customized one that is similar.

i rather take the trouble to carry the hardcase around than to damage my guitar.

i think a rdm spork or a mono guitar bag offers just as much protection imo. u really ought to take a look at how they are designed, then u'll realise what u're missing out. superb protection and handsfree, since they are strapped on ur shoulders. its better than lugging a very heavy case on one hand, which can cause problems long term for ur shoulder joints.

dont believe me? take a look:
