friends, need some feedback:

*is the gear review section helpful?

*why/ why not?

thanks for taking time to read & reply, means a lot to me :smt039

its pretty good, but more inputs from other authors/brands too would be better......if we all contribute a few reviews...... we might be able to have more reviews in there :)

boss, you've always made alot of SOFTies GAS. so i suppose it's helpful/unhelpful at the same time, depending on which viewpoint. :P

it's a little hard to keep track of the reviews sometimes because it's no longer part of the forums, but James does a great job of updating it on the front page, so not a big issue.

personally, i would like more pickup reviews. I know tone can be very subjective at times, but pickups tend to be one of the aspects that players can't try without buying to begin with. (I'm not sure if Sweelee follows DiMarzio's 30 day exchange program though.) And since you've tried many more pickups than the bulk of us, I think there's much more weight to your views than just blindly following the SD/DiMarzio reviews alone. :)

more reviews on amps, need reviews on keyboards, and other instruments(sax, horns, trumpets pianos), but currently, i'll give it a thumbs up looking at its progress, perhaps SOFT would let more people do reviews?

thanks for the reply thusfar :smt038

the reason why there are so many Ibanez reviews is that- there are so many Ibanez guitars to try... he he just kidding.

some people PM me for requests & i read more Ibanez ones than others, so there you go... i have a personal concern here also- i think the Ibanez brand name is popular for its floating vibrato bridge, but i simply do not want players to invest in dud units but i think this is a thing of the past because Ibanez did us all a favour by phasing out the dud ones; slowly but surely.

more pedals/ pickup reviews- point noted. i tried lesser pedals than i did before for a legitimate reason- i don't do pedals any more but i guess it's not all about me isn't it? will work on this...

i don't think James is preventing anyone from doing any reviews, all you need is some time to ponder on what to say about something...

well, how do we submit reviews? plus it'll be useful if people here are fans of a certain brand, it'd help alot... then soft would become singapores no.1 review instrument section...

oh yes, definitely useful

In fact i'm a big fan of your review.

If you need help to archieve your past reviews in the forum, you could PM me, mr subversion 8)

well, i'm sure thats gonna be useful to lots of softies out here, keys players here should write a review about their stuffs, i'm sure there are keys players here willing to do so?

Hello Subversion,
i think its a great contribution. Soft will never be the same without you, and we're all grateful (at least i am) for your presence.

Hope i dun offend but to be honest, i dun really buy your review. Reason is tt U are too much of a guitar lover, and the extend of your appreciation surpasses most people. This actually results in your reviews being too positive, cos almost everything sounds good to you! the number of stars proved it. cos i dun remember seeing any product getting 1 or 2 stars(or maybe im getting old..hehe...)

You do point out flaws here and there, but u dun criticize explicitly. n u will always round up the story positively. its hard to decide on which guitar to buy when all of them are good haha

just my opinion.

If possible, it would be very helpful, if you could include a recorded sample of you playing on that gear. Sometimes even with all those details you cited here and there, its still very difficult imagine how it will sound like. Providing a recorded sample will include some more objectivity into the review.. it will definitely help alot, especially since these kinda stuff largely based on personal preferences.

definetly helps me alot..and really thanks bro sub for your contribution :D

like what thor666 mentioned..it would be nice if there were more pickups review.

cheers 8)

I think its because an instrument can be used in a variety of settings these days i.e. the Telecaster being used in more than Country/Blues. Its a half-full approach as opposed to half-empty la. I think sub is trying to encourage players to go try for themselves rather than to truly know via reading reviews, if there's such a thing. But then again i'm not him, lets hear from the man soon :)

some very good inputs here, thanks everyone for having your say.

i think James need to provide another rating option instead of those 5stars thingy because in the review rating, it's a possibility of 10 marks but upon submission, it gets converted to the 5 stars option.

eg: supposedly a guitar gets 6/10 but upon conversion, it gets 3stars upon 5, with me so far? to me, 6 is a bland rating, but it's not really reflected in the 3stars, which many would view as just missing 2stars from out of the possible 5.

having any guitars below 5 is a serious proposition because it fails to meet its competent requirements. i've not come across a guitar of such calibre before, maybe there were dud, unplayable units a decade ago but the standard these days are high.

i'm also encouraging readers to reply/ comment/ propose further queries after reading a particular review. there's a 'post comment' option at the foot of the review, your say is just a click away... :smt023

*PS: i see more pickup review requests 8)

subversion : You the man :D My sincere gratitude to you for all the help in gear choosing , never ever regretted the aerodyne u recommended :D

hmmz , maybe a suggestion would be to include those small tables at the end of some reviews , to summarise the + and - points ?

Subversion, I think the descriptions of the products you're reviewing helps a lot, esp the pedals, cos without the reviews, I usually dunno what those things do (if the name of the pedals are not explicitly clear). And putting down the price gives me a good idea of what I'm geting into if I'm considering getting a particular product. As for ratings, how often do we base our decisions on them entirely anyway? Trying things out for ourselves is still the best way to go.
