Studio Headphones - Of Impedence and volume

Hi all fellow softies,

I recently got a mixer. To be precise, it is an old Yamaha MG 10/2 which I believe is already discontinued.

That aside, I'm currently using my Creative EP 630 to listen to the Phones out via a 1/8 to 1/4 plug.

It works fine but the only problem is the output level. When the phones output level is set at less than 1 (out of the maximum of 10), the volume levels are already enough to bust my eardrums. The prospects of someone or myself accidentally turning up the knob while my earphones are on are worrying.

From what I understand, the problem is that consumer earphones/headphones like Creative EP 630 have low impedance so that consumer gears are able to drive them. Mixers, on the other hand, were designed to drive earphones/headphones with high impedance.

So I have 2 questions:

1. Is my understanding of this impedance concept correct?

2. If so, what high impedance headphones suitable for simple studio work would you guys recommend. I'm not about to blow a few hundreds on it nor am I looking for the holiest grail, so anything below $100 would be acceptable.

Thanks :p
