Oh, you sure are nice to a newbie.
A Gibson lover might find a Fender Strat an absolute farce and compare it to a Proton car.

Anyway, you are trying to buy it from your school?
Don't get that but one of the cheapest and best Stratocaster model around is the Japan made ST-43 at 800+ first hand. I've seen many floating around the second hand market, so I think you can find one pretty easily. :)
I think you can find it at Luthermusic and Guitar77.
www.luthermusic.com
And a word of caution, many people buy a strat, only to realize that it doesn't really cut it for heavier styles of music and then sell it.
A strat's single coils are good for blues, but may not cut it for rock if you're planning to use it for that. So the best thing is to go down to luther and try it out yourself, then you can find out whether the sound is good enough for you. :D
Hope that helped.

Well, the guitar is selling for about 800 bucks, so I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of 600-700 if it's being sold second hand?

Here's one.

nice email add.

if u got a squier strat (it's strat short form :p) i suggest u stick to it. then next time probably upgrade ur pups or get a new guitar like a ibanez, that way u have different guitars to play wif

well, i'd recommand a highway series stratocaster, cause theres space for a humbucker at the bridge and neck, so if you get bored with your single coils, you have the power to change your sound, with a little money of course...

With Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio plus many others churning out humbuckers in single coil size, the last thing you've got to worry about is the pickup configuration on a strat, unless of course you don't plan to change the pickups....

the Highway1 costs more than the Standard, unless you are refering to the American Standard (discontinued WEF 1999)

until now i have yet to find a single-coil sized that sounds truely like a humbucker... i have stopped searching anyway

i hear lots of full humbucking tones in the Duncan Hotrails, the reason i have it in my tele

tone. teles are more twangy, generally. strats have a more mellow tone imho. also, strats are said to have a "quack" sometimes :D
