The virtuosic English pianist Stephen Hough will embark on a two-week exploration of Tchaikovsky’s more neglected piano concertos on July 3.

Savour this rare opportunity to hear the Second Concerto – also filled with the captivating, beautiful melodies we have come to associate with the Russian composer. Yoel Levi, Principal Conductor of the Orchestre National d’Île de France, will also conduct the SSO in Scheherazade, an immensely popular and opulent symphonic masterpiece inspired by the Tales of 1001 Nights.

And on July 10, Stephen Hough continues his Tchaikovsky fortnight with the colourful Concert Fantasy, which won public acclaim during Tchaikovsky’s lifetime, and the incomplete Third Concerto. Rising star Zhang Xian, assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic, makes her debut with the SSO in this evening’s programme, which also includes Ravel’s La Valse and the 1919 version of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.

Stephen Hough appears regularly with most of the major American and European orchestras under the finest conductors, and gives recitals at major venues and festivals across the world. Recent and forthcoming engagements include the Berlin and London Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras in Europe, the New York Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestras, as well as the Boston and Chicago Symphony orchestras. Hough has a catalogue of over 40 CDs which have won many prizes, including seven Gramophone Awards and three Grammy nominations.
